Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. She is known as “the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement.” And did you know she was also a vegetarian?! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate Kimberlé Crenshaw, the woman who coined the term “Intersectionality.” In her groundbreaking paper “mapping the margins” Crenshaw convincingly argues that the specific oppressions faced by black women cannot adequately be addressed through a feminist or racialized lens alone: it is the intersections of these oppressions that create unique, layered problems. Her work should be the starting point for anyone interested in intersectional studies!
10 more days until we drop a very special announcement! Hmmmm what could it be? Take a guess in the comments below!
We are so proud of our girl @genesisbutler_
! Genesis spoke at VegFest Calgary last year, and has grown so much as an activist for animals and the earth. We don’t know many people who have accomplished so much at such a young age! Check out her page if you haven’t already, she’s one of the most inspiring people we’ve met.
Your feed just needed a polar bear to get you through this polar vortex! Photo by @davesandford
Happy 100th birthday to Katherine Johnson, an African American mathematician who wrote complex calculations by hand for the Apollo space missions! She was just one for the badass black women portrayed in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Hey! Hey you! Do you want to be a part of VegFest? Our non-profit is growing rapidly and we need lots of help. We're currently seeking both ongoing and day-of volunteers to make this festival a success for the third year in a row! Go to the link in our profile, check out the sweet volunteer recruitment video, and tell us how you can make VegFest fabulous! We can't wait to meet you.
We're in solidarity with @kaepernick7
, a talented athlete who has been blacklisted from a game he loves just because he took a knee during the national anthem. He did it for an important reason, one that has been muddied in the hullaballoo that followed. With one simple gesture, Colin has drawn attention to the systemic oppression of people of colour in America, specifically police brutality towards black people. He states, “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Respect. Oh yeah, and he's also vegan. ✊🏽
UPDATE: After seven months of negotiations, Alberta officials finally agreed to sign a long-term lease with grow Calgary and confirmed the price and size. The new site in an industrial area in the city’s south-west will be 20 acres, nearly twice the size of the current location
ORIGINAL: Hey friends! An organization dear to our hearts, Grow Calgary ( @growcalgary
) is currently being forced to vacate their farm, and are calling for support from the Calgary community. Grow Calgary dedicates itself to making high-nutrient foods more accessible for all Calgarians. It donates fresh harvest yields, has veteran programs, and provides free environmental education to schools (amongst many other important community projects). .
Grow Calgary is located near the construction of a major highway, and although they have already moved off partially, they are now being asked to vacate entirely to accommodate the road. GC has proposed a simple design change so they can stay on the farm and retain years of land and community development, but the AB government has not compromised. GC wants to find a solution for both parties and is not trying to delay or stop construction of the highway. To help, you can sign the petition, contact MLAs, and spread the word! Also check out the post from our friends @ecofriendly.yyc
which will give you even more information!

Powerful revolutionary activist Angela Davis is also vegan: “I think it’s the right moment to talk about it because it is part of a revolutionary perspective – how can we not only discover more compassionate relations with human beings but how can we develop compassionate relations with the other creatures with whom we share this planet and that would mean challenging the whole capitalist industrial form of food production.” 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Did you hear? Canada’s food guide has undergone some amazing changes, and is now more plant-friendly than ever before. The dairy category has been eliminated and the guide recommends choosing “protein foods that come from plants more often.” Additionally, we applaud the reminders to enjoy our foods, eat with others, and cook at home more often. While the changes in the food guide are a huge step in the right direction, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that we only have about 12 years before we are at risk for climate change catastrophe. This means that the need to stop consuming animal products altogether is urgent! It is not enough to cut down or do meatless Mondays. Go vegan! And if you need help, just ask!
