Decisions around who receives aid must not be influenced or controlled by security forces or political actors. Those decisions instead should be guided by the level of need and must not put the people receiving it or distributing it in danger.
Decisions around who receives aid must not be influenced or controlled by security forces or political actors. The people who need it - and those who risk their lives to deliver it - deserve better. . . This is Victoria, of Falcón state, Venezuela, with her daughter. They're living in a group home in Colombia. Her husband was a police officer back in Venezuela. They shared that the low pay and violence pushed them to flee Venezuela in search of a better life.

Did you know? Inflation in Venezuela is projected to grow to 10,000,000% (no, that's not a typo) this year, up from 112% in 2015. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #Venezuela #refugee #humanitarian #inflation #displaced #compassion
Conflict has forced many sea ports in Yemen to close, triggering a deadly food crisis. We've been distributing humanitarian food baskets - with basics like flour, canned beans, sugar and vegetable oil - to help families like Abdullah's meet their basic needs. #YemenCantWait ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#Yemen #conflict #food #hunger #humanitarian
When Joseph's house was looted and burned after a violent outbreak in Kenya, he was devastated. Instead of living in resentment, he decided to join the peace movement -- becoming a chairman for the Sub-County Peace Committee and leader in his community. ⠀ -⠀ “We are able to reach down to the grassroots to reach peace.” #ChangeMakers ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#Kenya #peace #peacebuilding #conflictresolution #community #leader #grassroots #portrait #photography #photooftheday
We are inspired by leaders like Editar. She is a fierce champion for women's rights who connected with 300+ women and formed a vibrant feminist movement through our Violence Prevention program. Now, they are determined to fight #ToxicMasculinity in Kenya through activism. 💪⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#Kenya #activism #femaleempowerment #women #feminist #community #photooftheday
Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day! What are you doing today to create positive change? #RAKDay ⠀ .⠀ Back in Syria, Amani's mom taught adolescents crafts like crochet and knitting. It's been two years since their arrival at Azraq camp, and she's passing on the tradition to her daughters. ⠀ .⠀ Amani gives most of her crochet work away to her friends, "I make lovely things to give to lovely people.". #RAKDay #KindnessStartsWithOne ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ -⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#Syria #compassion #kindness #crafts #gift #giving #tradition #portrait #photography #photooftheday #RAKDay
Did you know? In agricultural communities where nearly everyone relies on natural resources, fisherman like Moses are often at odds with pastoralists who bring their animals to the water because of risks like contamination. 🎣⠀ ⠀ Moses was one of the fishermen who participated in our conflict management trainings. Now, he helps mediate conflicts and maintain peace in his community, “The training taught me an important thing. It exposed me to the importance of peace.” #ChangeMakers ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photos by: @ezramillstein#Nigeria #photography #photooftheday #fishing #natureshot #peace #peacebuilding #community #StrongerTogether #humanitarian
How does our Kenya violence prevention program work?⠀ 1. Ground level: Residents call/text a number to report outbreaks of violence. 📱⠀ 2. Like firefighters, members of the peace committee arrive. 🚒⠀ 3. Using de-escalation techniques learned in our trainings, they work together to defuse violence. 💪⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#conflictresolution #peace #community #Kenya #solution #photography #photooftheday #humanitarian
Friendship. Community. Compassion. We see ❤️ grow in some most difficult places we work around the world. No matter where it happens, love is worth celebrating. #HappyValentinesDay2019
Today we celebrate love wherever it is found. ❤️⠀ ⠀ Ameer is a Mercy Corps team member in Yemen. One day, his mother pointed out a veiled woman who she thought might be a good match for her son. Ameer said no — he wanted to make his own choice.⠀ ⠀ Then Ameer began talking to Hasna, a coworker at Mercy Corps. “I start to ask her where are you from, which district she is from, and she says ‘Ameer, I am Hasna, your neighbor.’” ⠀ ⠀ Their connection was instantaneous. “When I saw her, it was love from first sight,” Ameer says. Hasna admired the way Ameer helped others at work and always showed compassion. “He’s a trustful person and people love to be around him,” she says. “These things made me love him.”⠀ ⠀ Now, they’re approaching their 6th anniversary. They are both still working to help others in their community. In the future, they say that they both want to travel, experience new things together and support each other and their families. ⠀ ⠀ On Valentine’s Day, we wanted to share this story of unexpected happiness in challenging times. We hope it brings you joy to know that Ameer and Hasna found love in each other. Their story is a reminder to all of us that love is worth celebrating wherever we can find it. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #ValentinesDay2019 #ValentinesDay #love #LoveStory #Yemen #LoveAtFirstSight #HappyValentinesDay
In Goma, we support "Girl Clubs" -- safe spaces where young women and girls, like Imani and her daughter Desanges, can gather and discuss issues they're concerned about (especially health, hygiene and harassment). The clubs help girls learn to advocate for their own health and raise their voices in the community. #GirlPower ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @edalziel#DRC #Congo #youngpeople #youth #girls #women #health #advocate #rights #education #teaching #safe #portrait #photography #photooftheday #resilience #community
After fleeing violence in Nigeria, we provided Esther with training and seed money to start her own business. By saving and diversifying her investments, she now owns a brick-and-mortar store and has taken control of her recovery: “I feel like I have recovered completely because I can provide for my family adequately."⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @birdwannawhistle#Nigeria #violence #aid #conflict #business #smallbusiness #women #recovery #entrepreneur #photooftheday
Manjula grew up experiencing the failings of a poor education system, so when she saw the opportunity to become a teacher through one of our programs, she took it. Now, she's started an after-school program at her home and teaches 120+ students every day. ✏️📖 #ChangeMakers ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photos by: @eshmile#India #tea #school #teacher #education #humanitarian #compassion #opportunity #empowered #giveback #photooftheday #motivationmonday
Jummai's community in Nigeria has been coming together and working through conflict with peace-building activities. Her advice to ensure peaceful elections? "Is there a way you can build positive cohesion? If you are able to unite yourself, then whomever wins, it won't be a problem."⠀ .⠀ We want to hear from you: How do you think we can work collaboratively to prevent political violence during elections? In northern Yemen, Fatima and her grandson Mohammed used to have trouble accessing clean water. That changed when we built a solar-powered water point near their village. Now, the community has better access and they don't have to lose a whole day collecting water. 🚰💧☀️⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Photo by: @ezramillstein#Yemen #YemenCantWait #humanitarian #water #solar #solarpower #sustainable #cleanwater #access #portrait #photography
