Conditions in Rukban are desperate for the 40,000 displaced Syrians stranded in the remote settlement in south-east Syria. The majority are women and children who are long-term inhabitants. .
Rukban is a no manโs land on the Jordanian border with limited clean water. People live in makeshift shelters offering no protection from the cold, and health conditions are catastrophic. At least eight children have died this winter. .
This month, UNHCR took part in the largest inter-agency humanitarian mission of the Syrian crisis. Working with the
@syredcrescent and
@unitednations agencies, a convoy of more than 100 trucks and 300 humanitarian staff delivered desperately-needed food, medicine, shelter, winter kits, clothing, dignity kits for women, and educational and nutritional kits for children. .
We spent a week here assessing needs and saw children walking barefoot through mud and rain. Sexual abuse and harassment are serious protection risks. Some families have been here for four years and none of the children born in Rukban have civil documentation.
