About 70,000 Italian teens and young adults attended an evening meeting with Pope Francis at the Circus Maximus in Rome Aug. 11. The pope told them to witness to the world the love of Jesus. Most of the participants had walked at least 50 miles over the previous three or four days. Representatives came from 195 of Italy's 226 dioceses, and 150 bishops walked at least part of the way with groups from their dioceses. Fabrizio Ghilardi, managing director of the Wisdomless Club, poses at the club in Rome. In a city where many restaurants and bars are being modernized, the new club offers a quiet atmosphere with 1930s decor and classical Christian art. The club has a simple, yet elegant aesthetic featuring wood paneling, vintage chesterfield sofas, art and religious objects. Its name, Ghilardi said, is meant to be light-hearted self-deprecation; while the members are serious about faith and about life, they are at a bar, after all. (CNS photo/Paul Haring) #bars #drinks #decor #Rome #roma #clubs #Christian #art #Christianart #wood #paneling #vintage #sofas #beauty #atmosphere #raiseyourglass #religioustattoo #religious
For centuries, the faithful have climbed in prayer on their knees the 28 steps of Rome's Holy Stairs. According to tradition, the Holy Stairs are the ones Jesus climbed when Pontius Pilate brought him before the crowd and handed him over to be crucified. It’s said that Constantine’s mother, St. Helen, brought the stairs to Rome from Jerusalem in 326 A.D. Now Vatican restorers are completing the final phase of a 20-year effort to repair the sanctuary of the Holy Stairs and clean its 18,300 square feet of frescoes. Photographer Paul Haring caught this shot that shows some of the beauty of the restoration. People pray near a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on her feast July 16 at the Pontifical Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in East Harlem, N.Y. Founded in 1884 to serve Italian immigrants, the parish now ministers to a congregation comprised primarily of people of Haitian and Latino ancestry. Mount Carmel, which juts into the Mediterranean near Haifa, Israel, has been considered a sacred place since the prophet Elijah built an altar there in his contest with the prophets of Baal. The Carmel headland is traditionally associated with the beginnings of the Carmelite order around 1195, when a group of lay hermits formed a community there. The Carmelites chose Mary as their protectress and dedicated their oratory on Mount Carmel to her. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patron of Bolivia and Chile. (CNS photo/Gregory A.
