AFP Photo @luistatophoto - Boko Haram displaced feel forgotten amid Nigeria election fever - . Idriss Abdullahi was once a successful businessman and a husband to four wives, until the day he fled his home when Boko Haram insurgents advanced across northeastern Nigeria. . Five years on he lives beside dull farmland in a tented camp in Malkohi village, near the Adamawa state capital Yola, and tries to make a living selling firewood. . But the earnings are so meagre he has had to divorce one of his wives. . "Even an animal lives better than me," he told AFP in the camp he shares with 2,800 of his neighbours from the Borno state town of Gwoza, which the insurgents sacked in 2014. . More than 27,000 people have been killed since the Boko Haram conflict began in 2009 and some 1.8 million others are still displaced. . President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 on a pledge to end the insurgency, which at its peak saw the Islamists control an area the size of Belgium. . In Abdullahi's hometown, the wild-eyed leader of the jihadists, Abubakar Shekau, declared an Islamic caliphate. . An offensive involving Nigerian troops and foreign mercenaries pushed them back. But in recent months there have been signs of a resurgence. . Despite that, residents of Malkohi say they're ready to support Buhari at Saturday's rescheduled vote -- even if they can't return to Gwoza to do so. . "It's not that we actually love him," Abdullahi said of the president. "It's that he saved our lives from Boko Haram."
#AFPrepost @afpentertainment - 📷 Pierre Guillaud - Superstar designer Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85, his fashion label Chanel confirmed on February 19, 2019. - . Superstar designer Karl Lagerfeld died at the age of 85 on Tuesday, his fashion label Chanel confirmed. . The announcement came just a month after the man known as the "Kaiser" for his dominance of the industry did not appear at his Paris haute couture week show for Chanel, which he led since 1983. . The prolific German had left many younger creators in the dust well into his 80s, turning out collections season after season for Fendi and his own label, as well as Chanel -- the world's richest brand. . But in recent years Lagerfeld had visibly weakened, even if his extraordinary creative stamina showed little sign of flagging on the catwalk. . Friends had always said that the prolific creator would die with a pencil in his hand, and just last week his own fashion line Karl Lagerfeld was still announcing new design collaborations. . But speculation about his health spiralled last month after he missed the first show of his life, with Chanel executives saying that he "was tired this morning". . #chanel #Lagerfeld #karlLagerfeld
AFP Photo 📷 @freddufour_afp - Girls sport their ancestors' hair for Lunar New year in China - . Girls with large headpieces made from the hair of their ancestors and wearing intricately patterned dresses danced in isolated villages in southwest China to celebrate the Lunar New Year. . Against a stunning mountain backdrop, dozens of girls and women of the Long Horn Miao ethnicity performed for the annual flower festival or 'Tiaohuajie', held in Guizhou province. . Onlookers watched -- smartphones in hand -- as the women swirled across a meadow, wearing dresses and jackets embroidered with pink roses and geometric patterns. . But it was the towering black headdresses of the dancers that really stood out -- made from wool, string and the hair of their ancestors, and wrapped around animal horns with white fabric. . The Miao ethnic minority is made up of some nine million people, mostly found in China's southwest. Of those, around 5,000 "Long Horn Miao" live in just a dozen isolated villages in Guizhou. . Their headpieces are passed down through generations and worn on a number of occasions to honour their ancestors and preserve their traditions. . The festival is held on the 10th day of the Lunar New Year.
