Anyone else stiff in the morning? One of the habits I've built in my recovery is deep stretching in the morning after a cup or two of coffee ☕️ I always notice that if I skip my stretching my mood is not where I want it to be. It also radically aids in decreasing my anxiety and stress levels 🥰 I also like to wake up at least an hour before my first TASK so I don’t feel rushed or skip self care musts. Being good to yourself is essential in these times of rebuilding. - What is your morning routine like? I'd love to hear your tips & musts! 🙏🏻💞
You know that thing that you love? That thing you would spend all your waking hours doing if you could. Well, whatever that thing is, don’t do it for praise or accolades. Don’t do it because it may garner you attention, likes, or follows. Do it because you love it. Do it because you have an unbridled passion for it and you’re a better person because of it. Too much emphasis is placed on outcomes.... just do what you love because you love it. Isn’t that enough?

So if you’ve been watching my stories you know I’ve recommitted myself to my handstand practice in 2019. Why has it taken me so long? Well this first slide (which came up in my Timehop today) is the reason. This is from three years ago (YUP THREE) and it’s a 15 second hold (well that’s all instagram videos would allow you to post back then). It starts out shaky but then I remember the calm of when you’re just up there holding it. It was exhilarating. BUT look at my terrible form! I’m basically holding up the whole lower half of my body with my lumbar spine. This definitely falls into the “throw your legs up into the air and hope for the best” camp. Also note the pillow on the floor - i couldn’t cartwheel out for the life of me and my wheel landings didn’t always land so i had that crash pad working for me (rather than training cartwheeling out). As I strengthened my core and improved my alignment, my holds disappeared. This was January of 2016 and by February I am pretty sure my holds had disappeared. This was a year I was doing a daily handstand practice. It was demoralizing to go from this to no holds (especially watching other people starting to get better and stronger handstands). It threw me off so much that I’m pretty sure I didn’t handstand for the entirety of 2017. And only occasionally in 2018 in YTT and in friends classes. But this year I’m putting that behind me. I’m not looking at anyone else’s progress as a gauge of mine. N A M A S T E ~ It is traditional to end a yoga class by bringing the palms together, bowing the head and saying "Namaste". But what does it mean? In Sanskrit, 'nama' means 'bow', 'as' means 'I' and 'te' means 'you'. So literally 'I bow to you', although there are many interpretations among Yogis and Teachers. . I tend to end my classes with "The light in me honours and bows to the light in you, Namaste" as a way of showing my gratitude to my students for allowing me to guide them, honouring their practice. It is also a way of appreciating all the practitioners and teachers who have come before us, keeping the practice alive for all these years. I love the way it seals the practice and gives a moment of stillness, tranquility and peace; bridging the transition between on and off the mat. . A sign of deficiency of the root chakra shows up as feeling nervous, fearful, spacy, or acting capricious. Physical signs are thin body structures, which do not have a lot of mass to help you ground. Without much weight is it harder to process and settle the energy within our body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But not to worry ! Down dog can help with this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📿While in your downward facing dog, spread your fingers wide and evenly on the mat. All four corners of feet are connect to the earth if your body allows. Begin to press both hands and feet into the earth with purpose are rooting deeply into the earth. Now try to isometrically move your hands and feet away from each other. Pretend you are trying to tear your mat in half widthwise, this action should fire up and energize the body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📿Pay attention to your weight distribution, your weight should be evenly spread though each hand and foot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📿To continue begin to hug everything into midline, as the energy from the ground lifts your hips a bit higher. I take things personally. I realized today that it’s usually in my head. I have an older student who can only do about have the class and then he does his own thing. When I started teaching I assumed it was me, my style or just me as a person. It wasn’t about me, it was about him and his abilities. Often we take things personally that really have NOTHING to do with us. That person in the store that cut in front of you was most like not doing it to you. Its prenatal virtues include faith, honesty, openness, acceptance, and truthfulness. The postnatal emotions associated with the Spleen include worrying, remorse, regret, obsessiveness, self-doubt, self-centeredness, and suspicion. Spleen Qi Deficiency involves symptoms such as poor appetite, bloating (especially after eating), weakness of the arms and legs, fatigue and loose stool. This is just one of many examples of Spleen system patterns. Nevertheless, we can see how the stomach and digestion are interlinked with the Spleen. By practicing specific yin poses, we can alleviate some of the discomforts caused by the disruptions in both the spleen and the stomach. Yin poses that help restore Spleen/Stomach imbalances are those that target the inner legs, anterolateral side of the legs, abdominals and chest area. ⠀ Poses: 1. Lung - puppy pose 🐶 2. I get many messages or comments from many of you saying you admire my positive attitude or that you wonder how I get motivated to workout being so busy. • Firstly, thank you because that’s makes me happier and more inspired. But let’s keep it real. That’s just what you see on IG. In reality I’m definitely not always in a positive, lighting mood. I can be in some nasty moods, you guys. But when I receive those messages from all of you, it reminds me to snap out of it and call myself out on my own shit. That, and having a sense of humor to try and make light of things helps a lot. I use sarcasm as a coping mechanism. • As for staying motivated to workout, it really all boils down to being more intuitive as to how my body feels. As I’ve practiced more mindfulness, I notice when a food doesn’t make me feel good after I eat it. My stomach is upset. My energy plummets. Etc. Same with workouts. I listen to my body, and it ALMOST always feels better after I get some movement. But if your body is saying REST, then rest. If I’m too sick or on occasion too hungover.. I don’t necessarily workout because I don’t think it will better my current condition. • Find an outlet to being light! Listen to your body!

🥳🤸🏻‍♀️🗓Day 1️⃣7️⃣ of #AYearOfYoga2019 with @cyogalife ➡️ #ParsvaGarudasana 🗓🤸🏻‍♀️🥳 So, Carmen’s main pose today is the latest addition to my practice... on one side, anyways. 😜 It took me almost five years to get into #ParsvaKukkutasana 🐓 , two+ of which I spent going after the pose pretty aggressively + regularly. Twists are *not* a natural strength in my practice, and so I speak from experience when I say that adding a variety of other deep twists, from poses like #Corkscrew and #ChairTwist to a number of twisting #armbalances , is an effective strategy for eventually achieving more precarious doozies like #SideRooster . . There are two ways to enter this pose — either from standing with your knees bent + legs already wrapped in #Garudasana , or from seated with your thighs crossed, ankles apart, which you can then entwine once you’ve found liftoff. Make sure that you’re twisting towards the top leg to give you the best possible chance at the shape. I recommend that you keep your ankles free until you’re off the mat, otherwise I personally find it’s a little too easy to put unsafe stress on the knees and a lot more difficult to lift those toes. 🦶 🦶 Show some Love 🦶 🦶 . Winter in the North Country means snow. And snow means big, heavy boots and wool socks and foot warmers. Our poor feet are stuffed away and probably cold. . . In my yoga classes we have been doing some foot work to show some love to this most useful part of our bodies: our feet walk us on our journey through life, connect us to Earth, and are a reflection of our overall wellness. . . In addition to a bit of self acupressure, we will sit on our heels with toes turned under to lengthen the arch and sole of foot, and do down dog with toes turned under to lengthen and open the top of the feet. There are so many more fun things you can try with toes tucked under, too: three legged dog, twisted down dog, and any movements that feel great. . . Final day of #invertthenewyear is my king pigeon, it’s still a work in progress but hey that’s why it’s called a yoga “practice.” 🌸 🌸 Recently I’ve come to really embrace my water sign and truly go with the flow. Some people say Pisces in particular have an issue with time, but I don’t believe it’s an issue at all. We’re just perfectly comfortable with change and shifting when necessary even at the last second. 🌊 🌊 My practice is constantly shifting as well. Somedays I prefer arm balances and sub salutations other days I prefer laying in child’s pose and letting it all go. ✨ ✨ Recognize how you feel, see, and want to be each day even if it’s completely different from yesterday.
