33 minutes ⏭️1 minute . For a companywide Halloween competition, I told our choreographer that I could do the splits. That's a bit of an...exaggeration. But I'm not THAT far (or at least that's what I thought when I made that commitment). So I'm just taking this as a challenge to push myself for the next month and make it happen! This was my super speeded up stretch session today. I warmed up with a few sun salutations first. I have been working on this move from @leadersofmovement and I think it’s going really well. (You never realize just how big your butt is until you try to balance on a yoga block.) My flows are expanding; from yoga-ish push-up flows to stringing squat variations together to stuff like this, which are as much about balance as strength. I’m liking them because they force me to go slow and move deliberately, and that feels good on my brain right now. • [Image: a video of me going through a sequence of movements, filmed from the side. You know that thing you do where you let it go and you spend time thinking UGH I haven’t been doing ________. I’m a slacker. What’s wrong with me. I’m so out of practice. I haven’t been disciplined. How about if you just stop right now and go take your supplements, do 1 handstand, go have sex with your partner, call back your friend who you owe that call to and STOP the negative mental cycle in its tracks. So what if you haven’t been consistent? Give yourself permission to live and love and fuck up inconsistently, and imperfectly — it’s all ok because you get to decide in any moment how to turn it around should you choose. Everything is a choice including every single thought you think. For me today it was doing handstands. And practicing kicking up with my non dominant foot which makes me feel awkward and incompetent because I do shitty handstands when kicking up with my left foot. But I’ll never get better if I don’t give myself permission to practice imperfectly. That’s the magic baby. Thoughts become things. I’ve been rehabbing a cranky hamstring and find yoga stuff like three-leg dog and one-leg push-ups are a great way to strengthen without strain. When The summer of ‘87 ended on Labor Day, I was 17 and had fallen in love for the first time while working my summer job away from home. I had big 80’s hair, and was so so happy. And just like that Labor Day arrived and I had to go back home and leave all that behind. Even all these years later Labor Day still brings back all of those unsettled feelings and reminds me of how i still never want summer to end. First (sound on) the gym at @slslasvegas is attached to the spa, so I spent three days trying to be a badass to massage music. Second, this forearm plank-> dolphin is the worst and I can’t stop doing it because thanks to drills like this, I’ve never felt stronger in this devil of a pose (🐬👎). These two photos were taken about three years apart. You know how often I do side-by-side comparison like this? About every two or three years. • When I first started CrossFit back in 2006, I was hyper-focused on how it was changing my body. Selfies, constant comparisons, and "side-by-sides" meant I was scrutinizing every angle, every bump, every contour EVERY DAY. "Is this leaner? Is this bigger? Does this look better?" Every day, looking for tiny affirmations that I was making "progress." Sure, I was no longer on the scale, but I wasn't any better off. • It wasn't until I abandoned the comparisons and "progress" photos and just focused on the process that three things started to happen. First, I enjoyed my training more. SO MUCH MORE. It was no longer a chore or punishment, it was a joy. Two, I felt so much better about my body and showed up far more confidently in the world. Three, I ACTUALLY started making progress, probably because I started listening to my body more intuitively instead of maniacally trying to whip it "into shape." • I see this a lot in @Whole30 -land, too. Sure, you're not on the scale, but are you stuck in the mirror, in the selfies, in the side-by-sides? Are you still focusing THAT MUCH on what's happening to your body? Are you obsessing over miniscule changes or the lack thereof on a daily or weekly basis? Is that really serving you. (Notice, that last one isn't even a question.) • What if you stopped taking selfies, comparing, and side-by-siding, and just threw yourself into the experience? Took all that energy and focus and attention OFF the idea of "progress" and put it into the PROCESS itself. I’ve gotten questions about which cbd oil to use so I wrote a PDF guide for beginners. I have personally vetted all of these companies - they all have high quality products that are extracted using carbon dioxide & are lab tested for quality. Beware that there are a lot of cheap brands that extract cbd using toxic chemicals, so cheap cbd is usually a red flag. You want to look for the most cbd per dose for your money. Most bottles of cbd oil come in a 30 day dose. So for example a bottle that says “350” will only give you 11.6 grams of cbd per day. I recommend you purchase cbd that has a minimum of 750 and up to 1500 mg per bottle; which will give you between 25 - 50 mg of cbd per day. This guide tells you how to take CBD, find your optimal dose, & gives you a comparison of brands and products per price point. I personally use and recommend Kannaway’s premium oil. #MINDRIGHT Training evolution I used to train/exercise/move very differently to how I used to punish myself. I used to run, jump and lift my way into complete exhaustion. I ran 10kms and half marathons on very little to eat. I woke up at 4AM to go to gym. I Bootcamped obsessively. I spinned myself to “thinness”. I lifted hard and burpeed till I could barely breathe. I was sore and tired and depressed and I still carried a lot of weight - especially in my face. (NOT that I care about that anymore) . It did not do me or my anxiety any good. I was addicted and couldn’t stop. Until something snapped or rather someone snapped me back to reality. And I stopped. Slowly. The workouts faded. The food increased. The sour worms reigned. The chocolate turned from 90% black to milky goodness. And I stopped caring . Now? I train with grace. I found inspiration from @melissa_hartwig and her #yearofstrongandbendy and I train with weights and with a lot of yoga moves and walks. It suits me and I’m more happy for it #winning All I need now is a pair of @converse 💁🏻‍♀️

Patience. Mercury retrograde is nearly over. (Ends on Sunday) August always feels like trying to run through molasses. I just can’t get where I want to go fast enough in my work projects! When that happens and I’m in my head too much I get on my mat where i am in control of my breathing and movement. After 17 years of practice i have trained my mind chatter to just stop when i practice yoga. It’s just me listening to the sound of my breath. I don’t allow any self commentary, judgements, or emotional static in to invade my headspace. I’m simply breathing and moving. I allow whatever happens to happen. As I said in my story, I’m nursing an angry hamstring right now. My normal yoga warm-up aggravates it too much, but @dr.jacob.harden came to my rescue with a lovely flow he shared a few days ago. This weekend at @daysof47rodeo , the @marines had a chin-up station. I watched my dad approach knowing exactly what was coming. • Dad: “What’s your girl’s standard? I’m asking for my daughter.” Marine: (Glancing over at me and responding.) Dad (coming back over to me): “He told me, ‘If she can do 7, I’ll be impressed.’” Me: “Hold my LaCroix.” • The United States Marines (men’s large) t-shirt I earned will be cropped and made cute for the gym. Also, YES I took off my boots because they were these giant cowboy Fryes that must have weighed 4 lbs each and I was not messing around. I bought this book in February when I did my first #whole30 and I only used it for the first 8 days. I then proceeded to complete a Whole45 with the strength and determination of a Whole30 first timer . Now after awhile (about a month but also not 100% committed since vacation in early May) of not eating/drinking well, really struggling with having a #foodfreedombalance and a couple of @whole30 round two false starts (I have tried two times and made it to Day 8 and 14) I am going to use this book and restart today. I never felt better than at the end of my first round in April . 2 days ago I tried this pose for the first time. Or rather, I half tried -- I got into the preparation stage, thought about lifting my back foot, said to myself "No way am I able to do that!", then moved into the next posture of the flow. Last night I went to a lovely meditation (thank you, @livelightly_ !) wherein I was reminded that part of this practice is recognizing what is real as opposed to what is simply part of the story we tell ourselves. In regards to this pose, I had told myself I couldn't do it -- I wrote this falsity into my story based entirely off doubt and fear, rather than reality. My scorpion is a work in progress. It’s messy, not quite right, but a whole lotta fun. Basically, this scorpion pose sums up my entire being.
I’ve been doing these about twice a week, spending about 1:00 in the series (first and last set are real-time here), and I can feel a huge difference in shoulder strength and general body awareness in Dolphin. (Which is still literally the worst, beating Chair by a wide margin, tell me I’m wrong.) Also, I’ve got chalk on the floor to mark the point at which I lose my form (shoulders come in front of elbows)—so I know to work really hard when toes hit the line and not to go past that point. The Get-Up Sit-Up is a solid test of core strength; keep your heels GLUED to the floor as you sit up. (I know you are trying this on your living room/office/gym floor right now.) Because I’m extra, I like throwing in a modified Z-press at the top; hitting both shoulder mobility and core. • I show a scale at the end, either with or without weight. Squeezing a ball between your feet helps you engage your core and keep your heels down as you come up. Also, looking startled at the end of a set is not a requirement. @lucrenshaw , remember these? You know I love me a good compound movement, and five of these walk-outs in a row left me breathing like cardio. Mostly because I don’t really do cardio. These are easy to scale, too! Bend the knees as much as you need to from standing, then walk out to plank and back. I made up a flow today! All by myself! It took me like 17 hours and my shoulders are EXHAUSTED and it’s only like 6 moves how do you yoga teachers do this every. single. day? • I wanted something that would help me stick chaturanga from a variety of different entry points; I tend to either pop my butt up or drop my shoulders too low. 62 reps and four camera angles later, we have one tiny video. If I could pick ONE move in the gym that has elevated my hiking game, it’s the high step-up. @johnparker__ introduced me to it a few years ago, and after one winter working on them, I returned to spring hiking SO much stronger. • I have stupid long legs, but you don’t have to start as high as a 30” box. (Scaled version in second video.) Two pointers I learned from @bretcontreras1 : Don’t push off with the trailing leg—notice mine never bears weight. And don’t round the lower back. (Am I doing it perfectly here? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m not a trainer, so ask yours.) • NOTE: You CAN weight them, but I don’t. I just go slower and do more reps/sets, or raise the box. Recently I've been playing around with a new weekly fitness rhythm that more intentionally incorporates mobility training. Mobility isn't something I even thought about in my 20's, but now that I'm 38 I'm discovering a big need for it, especially in my hips.⠀ .⠀ The good news is that I love it! Alternating between yoga and mobility drills each day is just what I need to balance out HIIT, lifting, and interval runs. I can't wait to experience my hips opening up and getting stronger as the weeks pass.⠀ .⠀ If you're interested in mobility training, I recommend following @melissahartwig (her #yearofstrongandbendy is especially inspiring), and @themobilitymethod for ideas.⠀ .⠀ Do you already do mobility training? It’s a quiet week at my house. My kids are with their grandma for the week. Justin has started wheat harvest, so he’s out on the combine until well after dark. Yesterday I spent over an hour in meditation 😳 today I took a nap and then I realized I’ve been neglecting my mat, so I did a few run throughs of a couple of flows I made up. Oh, I also haven’t eaten meat in 2 days...I don’t know what’s happening 😂 I’m not sure what to do with myself this week!

Gonna start a new hashtag: #melissasgymwoo . (See last week’s post on gym meditation for more.) • Today in my deadlift training, I went from RDLs to sumo to conventional pulls all in the same workout. That’s because I use @ddn3d ’s Biofeedback Technique to help me figure out which moves work best for my body in any given moment. • Basically, it’s voodoo. You let your body tell you which movement to do, which variation is best, and whether to continue with another set or call it a day. I’ve been using it for so long that I can usually just pause, reflect, and know what to do without going through the whole test. Today, sumo felt off, so after a heavy set I pulled out the biofeedback test. The test told me to change my pull stance mid-workout. I did. Success ensued. • You know my programming is 100% intuitive, but intuition includes knowing when to use the right tool to guide me.
