Following today's Strongman Saturday session going back to basics with log c&p, I broke down a common problem for one of the lads, something I see a lot with novice strongmen/women.
It seems pretty simple, a push press, but unfortunately with a log it isn't quite that.
From top left to right, notice that my elbows DONT drop. Dropping your elbows when you dip is either game over or the start of a real fucking grinding ugly press. When your elbows drop, the log falls lower down the chest, below your shoulders. When you drive back up the log will most likely drive forward rather than straight up. Think about making the line of the weight as efficient as possible. Make it a straight line.
The next issue is the drive itself. If you dip slowly then the drive will be slow. If the drive of the legs is slow then the press is ALL going to come from the shoulders and triceps. That's inefficient.
Lastly! The lockout. At lockout the centre of the log should be directly above your heel and directly above your shoulders. NOT looking like an incline press.
So, let's recap on what you should be looking for.
1- Elbows pointing forward, eyes to the sky
2- KEEP YOUR ELBOWS UP! With a vertical torso, dip fast and drive fast - Think about JUMPING the weight off your shoulders.
3- Press explosively with the shoulders and triceps - Once the log is clear, punch your head through - think about opening up a window and sticking your head out - Eyes forward! Not up!
4- Core braced and tight throughout! - without the brace that's when a press turns into a press and stagger. Without the brace is also how you end up locking out in that incline press position whit a hyperextended lower back. That's never a fun feeling.
