David Van Cortlandt Crosby was born on August 14, 1941 in Los Angeles, California.
The singer-songwriter and guitarist is a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, in addition to his solo career.
Crosby has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his work in The Byrds and once for his work with CSN.
In 1967 he joined Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival, which contributed to his dismissal from the Byrds. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stills and Graham Nash of The Hollies. “Crosby, Stills & Nash” is the debut album by Crosby, Stills & Nash, which was released in May 1969.
It spawned two Top 40 singles, "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, the album itself peaked at Number 6 on the Billboard Charts.
The album was a very strong debut for the band, instantly lifting them to stardom. Along with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo and The Band's Music from Big Pink of the previous year, it helped initiate a sea change in popular music away from the ruling late sixties aesthetic of bands playing blues-based rock music on loud guitars. Crosby, Stills & Nash presented a new wrinkle in building upon rock's roots, utilizing folk, blues, and even jazz without specifically sounding like mere duplication.
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Crosby, Stills & Nash Number 262 on their list of The 500 greatest albums of all time!
