Let us introduce you to Shelley Torresan, winemaker @rockbare.
Shelley's in the running for the 2019 Top 50 Young Gun of Wine, to be announced this week. She's pictured here, at her favourite #Wineslinger
Q. Which of your wines best defines what you’re about?
A. Our McLaren Vale Shiraz is my comfort zone wine. It’s the variety I have worked closely with for many years, and I’ve been making some refinements to better showcase the special parcels we select from the region. I do also drink a lot of Riesling. So, now having the opportunity to make one, it’s given me an even better excuse to drink more.
Q. What winemaking lesson did you learn the hard way?
A. There is no black and white, nor right or wrong. You cannot make wine to please everybody, you can only make wine true to yourself, and stay proud no matter the feedback.
Q. What’s your favourite #Wineslinger
A. No matter the season, but especially heading into summer, it is just breathtaking sitting on the balcony at the Star of Greece, on the coast in Port Willunga, South Australia, enjoying their freshly caught seafood with a glass (or three) of wine. The welcoming, bright, airy feel of the place and the service is also a highlight.
Q. What are your 3 favourite wines right now?
Picpoul de Pinet: these refreshing, crisp and zingy white wines from the Languedoc are right up my alley. + Lenotti Rosato: our local gourmet Supermarket, Pasadena Foodland, has turned grocery shopping with our young kids in tow, into a highlight of the week – we order a plate of Salumi, a bottle of this simple Venetian Rose, and sit back and wind down. + McLaren Vale Grenache: not one particular producer, and a diversity of styles from dry Rose’s through to deeply concentrated, textural or savoury wines. None of them last long in our household. It’s wonderful seeing McLaren Vale finally being recognised as a leader in this variety.
