Former sulphur factory, unsurprisingly abandoned long ago since it's on an active volcano and kept getting blown away... mind-blowingly awesome place to visit.

I love these lil bees. Even if every year they sting me. They're native to New Zealand, and call this volcano home! White Island isn't desolate.
Unlike honey bees they're solitary, digging a lil nest in the dirt. During summer in the kanuka scrub on Moutohora all you can hear is these Leioproctus bees humming away ❤❤
“Don’t worry Mom, everything is awesome!” - This sign has never been more appropriate than now, when I am standing on the edge of New Zealand’s most active volcano, which is basically a tiny island🌋 It was named by Captain Cook in 1769, but the maori people call it Te Puia o Whakaari, which means “The Dramatic Volcano”.

An awesome trip to Whakaari (White Island) an active marine volcano in the Bay of Plenty. 🌋 It last erupted in Sept 2017. The island was desolate and the crater lake breathtaking.
Not sure the hard hat and gas mask were entirely necessary but the selfie definitely was! #whakaari #whiteisland #commondolphins #volcano #bayofplenty
It scares me to think one day I won't see dolphins all the time...
. Whakaari is the one that enables us to predict our weather, cos it’s an active volcano, so which ever way the smoke is blowing says a lot about what weather we’ll experience. See how its pretty still but slightly from the west... that means good weather. If it’s anything from Ngati Porou; that pretty much means bad weather 😂
As hard as I tried, I couldn't make her pop. 🌋 #blowhard
The island might only be 2.4km by 2km, but the volcano is 18km by 16km - so it's likely this whales swimming on top of the volcano 🌋
I wish we could stay with them all day. Life goal: must buy a boat.
How does three tohorā feeding around the boat sound? Like the best day eveer!
Check out the marks on the whale on the right.
Have you ever walked on an active volcano?
White Island is New Zealand's most active cone volcano, so imagine what it feels like to land directly in the crater.
Our team flew over with @volcanicairnz
, and with the entire place to ourselves it was like exploring another planet.
Don't let the hard hats or gas masks scare you – these are normal precautions for a safe and enjoyable tour.
Anyone heading over to Rotorua Crankworx should check out White Island (Whakaari), it’s a day trip to a live volcanic island with boiling acidic pools and this crazy sulphuric river that turns the ocean yellow. It’s a rad place to visit. This was back in 2006 for your #throwbackthursday
Legend of Whakaari / White Island⠀
Māori gave White Island several names but the most widely known is Whakaari - meaning ’that which can be made visible’.⠀
According to Māori legend, Whakaari was sent from Hawaiki - traditional homeland of the Māori - as a gift of fire to warm an ancient high priest named Ngatoroirangi.⠀
Ngatoroirangi and his party were ascending Mt Tongariro - a volcano in the Central North Island - when they were surprised by a fierce blizzard. Close to death, Ngatoroirangi made a desperate plea to his sisters Te Pupu and Te Hoata for help.⠀
The siblings rushed immediately to Ngatoroirangi’s aid, travelling beneath the earth and sea in the form of fire, rising occasionally to the surface. The first place they surfaced was Whakaari and thus, the volcano was created. They eventually made it to Ngatoroirangi to warm him with the fire from Hawaiki.⠀
Wherever they paused and rose to the surface, the sisters left part of the fire they carried, creating the Central Plateau geothermal system that includes famous North Island attractions such as Tikitere / Hell’s Gate, Whakarewarewa Thermal Village, Waimungu, Waiotapu, Orakei Korako, Wairakei, Tokaanu and the three volcanic mountains of Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe.⠀
