File this under weird things I do at work: finished off the day by picking cat bones out of the dermestid beetle colony we use to clean modern bones off! My colleague Brett is the master Skinner and I just help maintain the colony then organize our osteological collection for educational use or possible future exhibitation. #westernsciencecenter #dermestidbeetles #science #scienceducation
More Paleo prep work: Here I'm checking on one of the Paleontological Prepatory volunteer's fossil with a toothbrush and some good ol' H2O. Managing and training the prep volunteers has been an amazing educational process for all involved, me included! I am so grateful to have a job were I can expand my knowledge and share it with others 😁 #paleontology #paleoprep #westernsciencecenter
Me doing Paleontological Prepatory work in my lab at work. I'm using a microjack on an iron concretion with calcite running through it to uncover a possible therapod bone collected by our curator, Dr. McDonald, at the Menefee Formation in New Mexico. #paleontology #paleoprep #westernsciencecenter

My Jacob loves alllll things Science! He asked if I could find an intense science curriculum for him next school year so he could learn more and do more science experiments. He recently discovered #westernsciencecenter and has begged me every day for two weeks to bring him and his science loving buddy, Rylee for a field trip. So today... we spoke his love language and are enjoying some science fun! #paulschool1718 #science #homeschool #roadschool #travelwithkids #rvlife #homeschoolmom #sidthesciencekid #madscientist #boymom

Visiting Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet yesterday brought back many memories of my paleontology field work during the construction of this reservoir. In my 20 years as a paleontologist for the San Bernardino County Museum, this job site was my favorite. #paleontology #paleontologist #paleo #jamesbowden #jameskbowden #fossil #fossilbones #fieldwork #museum #sanbernardinocountymuseum #sbcm #westernsciencecenter #science #dam #damconstruction #diamondvalleylake #mastodons #valleyofthemastodons #mwd #reservoir #hemet #hemetca
I led a field trip yesterday for the Yucaipa Valley Gem & Mineral Society to the Western Science Center. This is a big-ass dinosaur claw!! Say hello to the hand claw of Saurophaganx, a very big relative of Allosaurus. This monster could get up to 43ft long and weigh up to 3 tons! . I seriously wouldn’t want to be around in the Late Jurassic when these apex predators were around. Can you imagine getting struck down by one of these claws!!?? . . . #jurassicjune #dinosaur #fossil #fossilsofinstagram #paleontology #filipinoscientist #westernsciencecenter #allosaurus #claws #thescicommunity #jurassicworld
This Saturday we’ll be up in San Jacinto with Record Family Wines as the Record Family will be hosting a private fundraiser for the @westernsciencecenter called, “Dinner Under the Stars.” We are so excited that they’ve asked us to plan a dinner for all of their guests centered around their award-winning wines and to help benefit such a great organization. More to come soon!

It’s #fossilfriday and we had a fun visit from our friends at the @westernsciencecenter today. Max the Mastadon (and his caretakers Alton and @brittandbone ) loved our Ephippiorthoceras, an Ordovician nautilus. These long, straight, shelled cephalopods dominated in a sea without fish and could grow to about 30 feet long! Not every fossil is a dinosaur. The term dinosaur is specific to the Dinosauria family of reptiles that roamed the earth from 240 - 66 million years ago. The Cretaceous Period was a heyday for dinosaurs and many of the most commonly recognized species such as the Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, and Triceratops come from this period, but it was also the end for most of them. The Cretaceous ended with a mass extinction event that resulted in the death of roughly 75% percent of plant and animal species on earth. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times! Hi everyone! I’m Brittney Stoneburg (@brittandbone ), a science communicator, vertebrate paleontologist (in training!), and the Marketing and Events Specialist for the Western Science Center (@westernsciencecenter ), a natural history museum in Hemet, CA. Along with @paleoparadox and @michellembarboza I’m also a cofounder of @cosplayforscience ! . I have an unusual background for someone who works in paleontology - I actually graduated from college with a B.A in English! I’ve loved museums and paleontology since I was little, but I didn’t have great math grades and was encouraged to pursue a career in something other than science. After college however I took a trip to the famous La Brea Tar Pits (@labreatarpits ) and knew right then and there that, no matter what I had to do to make it happen, I wanted to work in a museum. . I began volunteering for the Western Science Center in 2015 and was hired on two months later! Now I handle all of the museum’s social media, events, and more. My job is definitely a “many hats” sort of situation; one day I could be creating content for our website, and another day I could be taking a mastodon jaw to get CT scanned! It’s a great marriage between my love of paleontology and my background in the humanities - I think having a degree in English has really helped me bring a different perspective to science communication. . Considering how much classical literature I studied in college, I am super interested in the intersection of mythology, narrative, and science, as well as bringing seemingly dissimilar communities together to celebrate paleontology (such as Cosplay for Science and in my own job at the museum. . I am also currently doing research into local Pleistocene vertebrates to determine environmental changes, as well as 3D scanning the fossils from that collection to accompany the paper (open access, y’all!). . A special thank you to @dan_the_biology_man for putting together this amazing community of science communicators!

This Saturday, learn all about the science of being an anthropologist with free activities. . Try your hand at weaving and watch how a flint knapper makes a tool from stone, find out how cultural anthropologists learn about different cultures through food, and use your forensic skills to find out how physical anthropologists learn about the dead! . This event is rain or shine! Activities for Science Saturdays are free – there is an additional fee to enter the museum. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. . #WSCScienceSaturdays . . . #fun #kids #inlandempire #anthropology #science #education #communityevent #hemet #murrieta #menifee #temecula #westernsciencecenter #museum #palmsprings #sanjacinto #riverside
