2016 COS Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT
Sicily, Italy 🇮🇹
N: red currant, red plum, mint/bay, red/black licorice, forest
P: blueberry, red/black cherry, cedar forest, fennel/licorice, smoke
Cos is easily one of my favourite italian producers; biodynamic farming, fermentation in amphorae, and wines that speak strongly to their Sicilian varieties and origin. Their wines are emminitely crushable, and this bottle is no exception. Bright red fruit (currant, raspberry, plum) and fresh herbs (mint, bay) are lively on the nose, while the palate gives deeper tones of blackberry, cherry, and graphite. Black pepper and tangerine peel give the wine a zesty touch; a sense of fennel/licorice lingers throughout. The finish is half black forest cake, half smoke. On day 2, the smoke is accentuated and cedar forest is much more evident - all along, however, medium tannins and moderate weight give the wine excellent drinkability. Intriguing but not complicated, just as 100% Frappato should be - this is a great sip be it on its own or trying to do your best impression of a Sicilian kitchen!
