If I’m honest, these are the primary reasons I wrote down when I decided to try and lose weight and start resistance training ⬇️
1. Lose at least 14 pounds ✅
2. Get back into a size 8 ✅
3. Have more energy ✅
I’m not embarrassed when I look back at the first two goals. They came from a place of deep unhappiness and motivated me to make a positive change. But my thinking has evolved drastically over the past 2 years❗️These are the reasons I have remained consistent with the approach I adopted ⬇️
1. To (I hope!) live a longer, healthier, happier life ✅
2. To nurture my body and show it respect ✅
3. To learn + enjoy striving to achieve goals ✅
Disclaimer: aesthetic drivers are still there on some level as they support and enable the other goals, but they have dropped waaaay down the list. Realising what you are physiologically and psychologically capable of releases so many demons, it’s unreal. I care less and less about things that used to matter... wearing perfectly applied make-up; buying new clothes; looking at other people’s bodies and berating mine in comparison. I am comfortable in my far from “perfect” skin 95% of the time (I’m still human and have bad days 🙈) and wish that when I hear people saying they hate their bodies; they want to look different; they want to lose X or build Y, I could somehow communicate that the greatest way to achieve these objectives is actually by deprioritising them and setting completely different goals 💡
Focus on positive energy; growing knowledge; building strength (mental and physical); being surrounded by energising people... the rest will all fall into place if you can nail the above 🎓
