•FYI NOT PREGNANT, JUST BLOATED• . Guys, this is me after a week of eating A LOT OF GLUTEN in my diet. I’m not pushing my gut out haha and Yes, I even had the coronas in the background 😂 . I ate: bread, risotto, noodles, more dairy than usual, processed foods, including protein bars and almond chips 🙄, minimal fresh produce, although I did have homemade green juice 2 days and it eased slightly. I drank alcohol, had copious amounts of coffee and no where near enough water. . Side note: putting this down in writing is VERY confronting. . I experienced: bloating (obv), cramping, irritability, dull skin 😒, diarrhoea badly, constipation, water retention and headaches. . For the next week I am going gluten free and completely plant based so I shall show you the difference that a week makes for me. . How much water do you need? It depends on your size and weight, and also on your activity level and where you live. In general, you should try to drink between 15 and an 30 ml of water for each 450 g you weigh, every day. As an example, if you weight 68 kg, that would be 2200 ml-4000 ml of water a day. Do you want to learn what that even means? ———————— Whenever 3+ clients ask me the same question, I like to come here and write a post because clearly more people might have the same question. I actually learned that some people might think water retention means that they are drinking “too much” water & were even wondering if they should cut down their water intake. So here I am ready to put science & nutrition together. Ask your questions in the comments section. ———————— It is true that your body is holding up excess fluids but not because of too much water, actually it has a lot more to do with foods. ———————— 1. Too much salt! Salt= sodium + chloride. Sodium binds to water so decreasing sodium may actually reduce the water retention. Processed foods are often high in sodium so I would avoid eating out/ having too many package foods. 2. Minerals deficiency! People don’t pay as much attention as they should to minerals consumption. Potassium & Magnesium is extremely important in our body and those minerals are responsible for more than 300 reactions that keep our body functioning. Without these important minerals, our body can’t do its job. 3. Inactivity= no exercise/ no body moments can also lead to water retention hence it’s common in bedridden patients (often on elderly people that can’t move & are sticks to their beds) —————————— The picture above is a great example for a rich breakfast loaded with vitamins & MINERALS. Plain yogurt, chia seeds, oats, kiwi & berries. (lots of magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin K, vitamin & healthy omega-3 fatty acids) Not all yogurts are created equal, some are loaded with SODIUM & SUGAR, so make sure to read the ingredients list. The one above is from White Mountain Bulgarian Yogurt, check out the 2 INGREDIENTS: grade a pasteurized whole milk and live cultures (l. acidophilus, l. bulgaricus, s. thermophilus, b. bifidum) —————————— Of course, water retention can be way more than what I mentioned above but figured this could be a great start. Memories .. Thats me about 3 years ago when I fell pregnant with my angel at age 26 ☺️ I was in the office working 10hs a day until my due date pretty much and found comfort in working out in the evenings. It helped with #waterretention and a posture generally. Fast forward and he started nursery this week and a huge wave of gratitude and nostalgia washed over me. Motherhood is a magical journey, one in which you carry your heart outside your chest (literally once baby is out of your tummy) and it made me me even softer (ask my man and he’d be like “why do you have to cry in all the movies??”). There’s a saying “it takes a village to raise a child” but these days there are many women who don’t have family around, simply given the location (often different continents) and combining motherhood, career and partnership stretches you in all directions. You feel mum guilt when you’re at work but also when you’re not working and honestly let’s cut each other some slack and be kind and proud of each other. Proud of everyone’s achievements no matter how one decides to embark on this journey. Weigh Day this morning. Put ON 1/2 a lb! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't unhappy, as ive stuck to plan all week. But I do know why my weight is up so I'm not too disheartened. I'm hoping it is just water retention/bloat/hormones and next week will be back on track. Week 2 day 2 😭 Despite having lost 2 lbs (155.6) from last week I weighed more today from yesterday. Why? WATER RETENTION. I worked out Saturday, Monday, and now today. 🤦🏻‍♀️Been on a diet and training but It’s your weight stalled and not going down ? 🙅🏻‍♀️ Start with the simple stuff first. a) have u gained muscle? b) are u really consuming 1500 kcals daily, consistently? c) are u holding water? Have u been to the bathroom before weighing? There is not situation where u have gained lbs of fat in 7 days at 1500 calories. If u have gained that much on the scale at 1500 calories u have to be retaining a lot of water. Not to say other things aren't going on, but water retention is going on somehow. If you are a woman It can be anything along the lines of electrolyte balance, elevated stress hormones, menstrual or menopausal symptoms, or even possibly constipation and extra bowel weight. Unless your health is at risk, it shouldn't really matter, but if it's important to you for whatever reasons, check the foundational red flags before jumping to more complex interpretations. And remember: weight management never presents itself as a straight line, but a wave of peaks and troughs. You’re physiology is changing every single day. # There are practically a bazillion things that affect what the scale will say: # Menstrual cycle- LADIES - uh, need I say more? 🥤Hydration- are you dehydrated/ overly hydrated? # Sodium levels- Did you eat out yesterday? Restaurant food = higher in sodium = water retention. 🥨Carbohydrate intake- each gram of carbs intake also requires the holding of 3-4 grams of water for storage so that instant weight loss you see when you drastically cut carbs out… yeah that’s not fat, that’s water, but I digress. # 🛌Sleep- Get enough of it, the scale goes down. Get too little of it, the scale goes up. This is mostly due to increases in stress on the body which also increases water retention # Oh, yeah! Stressed the F out!? Meet Justine. Justine is an experienced MLD therapist in the UK. She was educated and grew up in Cape Town and Namibia, before becoming interested in complementary therapy, which she studied at Wirral Met College. Justine has worked within the NHS Breast Cancer Clinic in Manchester, where she met women with lymphoedema, who she felt weren’t given the care they needed. First and foremost I am not giving up. (Long post alert 🚨) . Please don’t get me wrong, I know that with any weight loss journey that weight gain is bound to happen, and sometimes for no obvious reason. I’ve tried my fair share of diets and have experienced it each time. But for some reason this time felt different. . Possibly more dramatically than necessary (I’m a typical over analyser) I’ve gone through a range of emotions today. Ultimately I’m just very frustrated - I was confident going in to my weigh in, and it backfired, who wouldn’t be?! I’d had comments of “you can really see it in your face”... and I actually could feel it in my clothes... but alas, it wasn’t meant to be today. Frustration, plain and simple. . Muscle gain. Water retention. Time of the month. All valid reasons for weight gain. Without going in to too much detail (that’ll come a little later on down the line, when I pluck up the courage to share) I believe my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a huge player in this. I feel like I am (and have been) constantly, since the age of 14, in a game of catch 22. Games are meant to be fun - this one, not so much!! . I am confident this will not deter me and I am proud of myself for getting this far. I am not planning on quitting any time soon because as I said, this time feels different. I've only just worked out my intolerance towards raw onions and garlic, I never could understand why after eating certain foods, I'd get pain in my joints, my face would swell, I'd get a foggy head, all I want to do is sleep and after researching and noting what foods I ate and how I react, I've discovered this. It's a reaction to allium intolerance, to onions, garlic, spring onion, leeks.
