It was the summer of 94. Steve Jobs walked into the break room at NeXT,Inc. and surprised a bunch of employees when he started making a bagel. Employees in the room were discussing, “Who is the most powerful person in the world?” One guy said, "Mandela.”
But in his confident fashion Jobs interrupted with, “NO! You are all wrong! The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller.” Everyone already wondered about Steve's mind, after all there is a fine line between genius and absolute loco.
Jobs continued, “The storyteller sets the vision, values and agenda of an entire generation that is to come and Disney has a monopoly on the storyteller business. You know what? I am tired of that bullshit, I am going to be the next storyteller” and he walked out with his bagel.
Shortly after, Jobs began taking an active role in Pixar, making himself CEO in 1995, after having funded/purchased the company in 1986. Pixar’s first full-length animated film, "Toy Story," was released in 1995 (the year after the above quote).
Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 and became CEO. He then led the company, which had been near bankruptcy, on a journey to become the most valuable brand in the world with a series of viral, game-changing and world- changing products. But equally important, Jobs brought his storytelling skills to sell those products and create incredible brand loyalty,
Through Pixar and Apple, Jobs did set the “vision, values, and agenda of an entire generation that is to come.
