I’m not going to talk about Kurt Vile today (though this IS an amazing album), instead I’m going to talk about the artist who painted the mural featured on the cover.
His name is Stephen Powers and he is like a god to me.
I first discovered Powers (also known by his tag name ESPO) around 10 years ago when he did a series of 50 murals in Philadelphia called ‘A Love Letter to You’. I’m sure all you Philly natives have seen his beautiful pieces, they’re pretty damn hard to miss.
He was my inspiration to get into design and typography, I pretty much ripped his style off through my 4 years of design school haha. His work to me is everything that design SHOULD be. It’s bold and punchy, and so funny, but so gorgeously sweet and sentimental. It makes you FEEL something. And because of his background in graffiti, there is an underlying factor of complete cool. Which I guess is why he was chosen to design the cover for this album (located at N Front Street in Philadelphia.)
I’ve been looking for a way to incorporate him into one of my posts, thanks to @jareds_wax
for the inspo and once again his fabulous hand modelling skills.
I’ve added some of my favourite Powers pieces into the slideshow, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do ❤️ #albumcoversirl
