Illustration from a 1940s Weird Tales that reprinted “Pigeons From Hell” by Conan The Barbarian creator, Robert E. Howard. I personally love this story. It’s terrifying. I also love the graphic of this version, although I Thing the original was done by Virgil Finlay. That’s hard to beat. . . . . . #vintagepulps #pulp #pulpmagazine #pulpart #esoterica #illustration #illustrationart #vintage #retro #weirdtales #robertehoward

Saw these cool vintage pulp books at the flea market last Sunday. I didn’t purchase any due to the low condition but seriously considered getting a few just for the amazing painted covers. I love the Floating Robot 🤖 cover, looks like a giant hot dog or something else, no wonder that poor woman is frightened! Swipe to see some of the books that were available. There were at least 25 books ranging from Westerns to Sports to Fantasy. • #vintagepulps #fleamarketfinds #fantasticadventures #planetstories #startlingstories #paintedcovers #oldpaper #floatingrobots #robotcover #igcomics #igcomicfamily #comiccollection #comiccollector #ohmancomics
Latest eBay book delivery: Some Poul Anderson with Michael Whelan covers. I must admit I bought these solely on the strength of the cover art an typography (judging the books by their covers!), so I hope they are actually good too... 🙈😆 Anyone read any of them? Or anything else by Poul Anderson? He’s one of Gary Gygax’s favorite authors, and his Three Hearts and Three Lions is apparently one of the big influences behind Dungeons & Dragons, so I have high hopes they will be enjoyable, but I might be setting myself up for disappointment. (You should always expect to be underwhelmed and let down, and you’ll be that much more likely to be positively surprised! That’s ny motto anyway. Should have that translated to latin and put on my tombstone as an epitaph. 😆)

Love this werewolf art...! Story by American author Manly Wade Wellman; it originally appeared in WEIRD TALES (May 1951) and featured occult detective John Thunstone. The tale was sold to England by Forrest J. Ackerman; he sold several stories to the last handful of issues before its untimely demise, including a first printing of an Andre North story (in issue 16). The final weird illustration from this British digest-sized ghost and strange tales magazine PHANTOM (likely the work of Cliff Lawton) that I will contribute here for a while. I want to switch gears to some other lovely items, but do promise to return to extract further editions of PHANTOM from my shelves! #britishpulpfiction #werewolf #occultdetective #manlywadewellman #weirdtales #weirdtalesmagazine #horrorstories #pulpfiction #pulps #vintagepulp #vintagepulps #pulpart #pulpster #vintage #pulpmagazine #illustration #penandink #art #artwork #blackandwhiteart #blackandwhiteillustration #blackandwhitedrawing #retro #bibliophile #antique #bookstagram #tattooart #clifflawton #forrestjackerman #wolfart

BLACK BOOK DETECTIVE hypo / bondage magazine cover illustration by Rudolph Belarski cover from June 1947. Black Book Detective all star Tony Quinn as "The Black Mask," a more vicious version / predecessor to Batman in the comics. Other contributors: Sam Merwin, Jr., Jack Kofoed, Samuel Mines, Edward Churchill, etc. My copy isn't in great shape; ravaged and missing large chunk of the cover on the bottom. Wonder Woman wannabe or a superheroine in her own right? If you have never heard of her, meet Violet Ray Brandt, a genetically altered woman "of almost supernatural beauty ... [who uses] her brilliant brain to create unheard-of weapons of menace and destruction, [breaking] the will and strength of men and [elevating] women to positions of wealth and power..." I don't know why this was never turned into a TV series back in the 60s. Sounds pretty damn entertaining to me. In other news, here's a rare 1953 Harlequin edition of The Golden Amazon. Cover has some wear and pages have tanning. Al Gabriele illustration for Henry Steig's musical love story, "Boogie-Woogie Lover." The story deals with a 1940s American man who despises anyone that isn't hep to the blues, jazz, dance, etc. Al Gabriele contributed illustrations to Collier's magazine, the Bluebook magazine, however, among Marvel Comics enthusiasts, he is widely known for having contributed to the super early CAPTAIN AMERICA and SUB-MARINER comics. #henrysteig #algabriele #bluesmusic #jazzmusic #dancing #hep #boogiewoogie #marvelcomics #captainamerica #submariner #comics #comicart #vintageillustration #illustration #illustrationart #penandink #penandinkdrawing #blackandwhiteillustration #vintagemagazine #worldwartwo #worldwar2 #vintagepulp #vintagepulps #vintagepaperback #vintagepaperbacks #pulpmagazine #pulps #rarebooks #bookstagram #bibliophile

The last 4 issues of TALES OF WONDER utilizes the same cover art. Deep into World War Two, the publishers lost authors and artists and workers to the war. Costs were cut, and if you can read the side-note on this last issue, it clearly states current English affairs. Despite a promise to come back, TALES OF WONDER met its demise with Number 16. The majority of stories are American sourced pulp reprints, pure classics. Clark Ashton Smith landed in all 4 final editions. #clarkashtonsmith #johnbeynon #milesjbreuer #ahyattverrill #britishpulpfiction #talesofwonder #pulpster #vintagepulp #vintagepulps #vintagepaperback #vintagepaperbacks #pulpmagazine #pulps #rarebooks #bookstagram #sciencefiction #fantasy #supernatural #uncanny #strange #vintageillustration #illustration #illustrationart #bibliophile #retro #vintage
Latest eBay find to arrive: Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné stories with the classic Michael Whelan covers. I never read these growing up, but the covers of several of them were licensed and re-used for the box and books of Swedish RPG Drakar och Demoner, so seeing them just fills me with all kinds of nostalgic warmth and fuzzyness! I have read a bunch of the stories, but I still have more than half of them left un-read, so I’m looking forward to getting into them! Have you read them? What did you think?

The Thing by John W. Campbell. Art by Stan Pitt. This is the same as John Carpenter’s “The Thing”. It was also the story that “The Thing From Another World” was based on. It was originally published in Astounding Science Fiction as, “Who Goes There”. This however is an Australian printing from the 1950s. Super Policier, early 1950s. This is a French variant of an American pulp. It has a Norman Saunders cover from Dime Detective (I think) and the logo of New Detective / Super Science Stories. I love these non-American variants. I recently go several French pulps and paperbacks that are so beautiful. I was so happy to learn that the French made pulps. . . . . . #vintagepulps #pulp #pulpmagazine #pulpart #esoterica #illustration #illustrationart #vintage #retro #normansaunders #frenchpulp
If this cover illustration looks familiar to some of you 500+ followers, I recently posted this item on the OLD PULP group on Facebook. Click the Instagram Stories for further images from inside this issue. "Gripping Detective Cases" was a Canadian magazine featuring nothing but true crime cases. Inside are original photos from court cases or illustrations. Another magazine of the same title had prior existed in the United States. The Canadian title is not only many times rarer, the covers make them much more desirable, despite the crude execution of the artwork. #canadianpulp #grippingdetectivecases #canadiana #canada #canadianart #canadianartist #truecrimestories #truecrime #vintagepulp #vintagepulps #vintagepaperback #vintagepaperbacks #pulpmagazine #pulps #rarebooks #murder #gangster #detective #mystery #crime #vintageillustration #illustration #illustrationart #penandink #penandinkdrawing #blackandwhiteillustration #bedjacket #blonde
