Another example of tying distal segments together to encourage more proximal movement. By keeping my hand connected to the back of my head, I’m imposing a constraint on cervicql rotation (especially when turning my head toward the ceiling), which means I have to find thoracic rotation. (You can see that when I release my hand that frees up more cervical rotation)This is one of my favorite ways to come into—and teach—extended side angle, because it encourages thoracic rotation. Notice also that when I reach my arm overhead, I’m initiating that movement proximally, letting the turning of my rib cage help my arm reach overhead. I find many students have difficulty or discomfort reaching the arm overhead in this pose, but by shifting the focus from distal movement (the arm) to proximal movement (the rib cage), the movement often feels much better.

Day ③ of #YogisAgeGracefully - Bind time for 29 - Any Bind Taking a time travel back to 2008 again. Back then, I enjoyed playing #CityOfHeroes , which was the greatest MMO of all times. It had state of the art character customization, great variety of powers, got regularly new updates, consisted of multiple types of environments and allowed great role playing. There were ancient Rome, cities, countryside, forests, caves, offices, futuristic stuff and more. Later on, it got improved graphics, Mission Architect to design missions and the Going Rogue expansion that allowed characters something between good and evil. My most successful character was Intussusceptor, a soldiers/poison mastermind. He was my only character that could solo an archvillain on same or higher level, and my second to hit level 50. His powerset was considered underpowered, but I could overcompensate for it with efficient control of his soldiers. Playing him felt like having a real time strategy mini-game inside the MMO. I don't play any MMO today, as the game was shut down in 2012 and I didn't found any other game that I felt satisfied with back then. But maybe one day I'll find a new game to fall in love with. So day 11 of #MOVEember was #extendedsideanglepose / #utthitaparsvakonasana One of my favourites, it's just such a nice bit of stretch! Not quite "by the book", seeing as I do prefer hand inside rather than outside the leg but it's fun to play with both. To be honest, playing with lines in any of the warrior/lunge variants is super enjoyable. Many of us carry a great deal of tension in the upper back because of the amount of time spent looking down at a screen. Stress will also cause tension in the same area, so most of us are doubly doomed to have discomfort, lack of mobility, and pain in this region. It can be difficult to deal with tension in the upper back on one's own, but Utthita Parsvakonasana is a perfect movement to release that tension and ease the pain and stress associated with it. - The release of all of that tension can lead to a flood of emotions. The further I get into the pursuit of a career teaching movement, the more gratitude i have in my heart for the practice of yoga. When I think back to the person I was prior to my teacher training in March, I am in awe of how much a person can change in such a short period of time. The person I was in January is SO different than the person I am today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yoga gave me a voice, and a home; the confidence to assert my own worth, the desire to really listen to the people around me, the strength to voice my own opinions even when they are unpopular, and the ability to love myself... even when the world comes crashing down around me as it sometimes does. In a lot of ways, yoga even gave me back the art of dance... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ the farther I get in the pursuit of teaching movement, the more I realize what a difference it actually makes in peoples lives. How a 1.5 hr dance class can leave you with inspiration for months to come, and how a single yoga class can shift someone’s entire day or week within the span of an hour. And with that inspiration they can go forward to be better, more productive, kind, and present versions of themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our bodies are powerful tools, and if we don’t learn to love them, to nourish them, and to put them in environments that build us up rather than break us down, then our bodies cannot support our minds or our souls, and we become deadweight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Especially if you are a follower of mine that sits a lot, or maybe doesn’t have the opportunity to move as much as they would like, do something for yourself today or this week. Go on a hike, walk the beach, go to the gym, take a yoga class. If you’re in the LA area there is no excuse. I better see you in my yoga classes, that’s what the guest spots are for. This week we will be using blocks🙏🏻For Day 9, we have #UtthitaParsvakonasana or #extendedsideangle 💜 . . ✨Helpful Tips✨ Make sure the legs and hips are warm before trying this pose. Use Warrior II legs. Keep the front knee stacked over the front heel. Try to keep the weight distributed eventually between both feet. Hand can be on the inside OR outside of the front foot. If taking the hand on the inside, think about pressing the shoulder into the knee and knee into the shoulder. Remember you can change the height of your block! If you don’t have blocks, you could use books or anything that will bring the earth up to you👍🏻😄 . .
