One of the biggest takeaways from my first YTT is that there is rarely ONE singular “right” way for every body. Take chair pose for example (which, btw...is my most dreaded pose in a yoga class 😂). Some cues you might have heard: draw your shoulders down your back, tuck (or lengthen) your tailbone, draw the ribs down, weight in your heels, sit lower...lower...LOWERRRRRRR...still go LOWER... . While those are all great cues there are so many other modifications and variations to this simply complicated pose: - Cactus your arms - to help open your chest (backbend warmups) - Push an invisible ceiling away from you - prep for handstand - Separate feet hips width apart - also helps reduce strain in your low back - Extend one leg - to build leg strength - Chair upside down! These are to just name a few! . The pose doesn’t end at a “right” way. And what is ‘right’ for one person’s body may not necessarily be ‘right’ for someone else. Here’s a great way to spice up your balance poses in yoga, as well as your hip rotation! . . . We start with standing pigeon chair pose. But whereas in this pose the pigeon leg is usually propped into its position *passively*, here we train that hip’s flexion/abduction/external rotation position *actively*! . . . Then we take that pigeon leg down and behind us, crossing the midline and lowering down into a curtsy squat (yay for hip internal rotation work, which we rarely see in yoga!) . . . After that is maybe my favorite part: handstand hops with crossed legs that switch over each other with each hop! . . . Then we attempt to maintain balance as we rise back up and find standing pigeon chair again. Does the pose feel any different visiting it again after exploring this entire sequence? 💙 . . . . . #utkatasana #squat #pigeonpose #inversion

Sometimes, when I’m really anxious, I’ll grab my mala beads and run the beads through my fingers one by one till I make it through a full rotation. I’ll usually say a mantra or phrase in my head as I go from bead to bead. Sometimes it’s a long mantra, or if I’m really stressed, it can be as simple as the word “love” over and over. It’s been a good tool for me if you’re looking for something to help your anxious moments. 🖤📿plus...... coffee 😋☕️
Ardha Utkatasana: Down and up actively strengthens the lower back, upper back, hips and thighs. It might be too strong for some beginner students or for those with weak or hurting lower backs. To help engage the correct muscle and make sure your creating strength and room for baby, place a block at it's widest part between your feet and another block on it's narrowest width between your thighs. Bend at you hips and knees like you're sitting back in a chair. With prenatal the goal is not how low you can go, but if you can bend and squeeze without dropping the blocks or having your knees pass your toes. Feel free to us books or boxes as well. Day 6 of our #GroundedAsanas Challenge❄️🧘🏼‍♀️❄️ . Today’s pose is Utkatasana, or Chair Pose☃️ . Babe fell asleep for a few mins so I took the opportunity to do a little yoga. Utkatasana strengthens the spine, thighs, calves, ankles, and helps reduce flat feet. It engages your core to stabilize you, and develop balance. It’s a great stretch throughout the chest and shoulders. It’s stimulating for the abdominal organs, and diaphragm. Standing in chair increases heart rate, in turn stimulating the circulatory and metabolic systems. Really wakes up your whole body! This is another pose to build stamina and endurance, all while toning the nervous system. Utkatasana is a functional exercise as you need the strength and balance in performing every day tasks, like actually getting up out of a chair. Utkatasana translates into an intense or powerful pose. This asana is also called the Chair Pose, the Powerful Pose, the Awkward Pose, and the Fierce Pose. Utkatasana, Chair Pose, Fierce Pose, Hazardous Pose, Lightning Bolt Pose, Wild Pose in which the knees are hips-width apart, the knees are bent, hips are back, chest is forward, and arms are above head, in line with the ears.
