Happy Easter...? Fluffy chicks, along with easter eggs, are a part of our christianised culture. As symbols of spring, fertility and new life, we revel in their cuteness. Even if they are just made from yellow pipe-cleaners with beads for eyes... This triptych of dioramas is a tribute to the estimated 7 billion male chicks killed every year worldwide, at one day old, because they were born the wrong gender to lay eggs. It also stands as a tribute to the females whose suffering remains unseen, while they merely exist as egg producing machines, so we can access a food source we do not even need.
The egg-layer chicken has been genetically modified over generations to produce a lean bird who will lay an unnaturally high quantity of eggs in her short lifetime. These birds are hatched in metal trays in huge, windowless warehouses with strictly controlled environments. A few hours after breaking through the shell, they will be sorted by gender. Females are sent to join the laying flocks, males will be gassed, macerated or suffocated, as an unwanted by-product. All these procedures are normal, industry recommended practice, worldwide.
Every chicken in this system suffers. Even if you keep happy hens in your back yard, to use their eggs is to promote a false and speciesist way of thinking. That other animals are here for us to use.
