Even though I was back in India earlier this year, it feels like forever.
I read somewhere recently that familiarity is not about the places you frequent or how many people you know. It’s about everything the place reminds you of.
Each time I’m back home, even though the contrast of my life abroad is sharper, the adapting is not. The sights, the smells, the people, the food, the languages, the traffic, it brings so much back, all at once.
It brings back what it feels to be a part of a community where someone else’s problem is always bigger than yours. It brings back the feeling of how truly blessed and grateful I am to be able to have a life that the majority of the people cannot. It brings back the thought of how important it is for me to give back to those who have less.
This feeling is something i will never have in Europe, since in a perfect European world poverty or deprivation is not chronic. It’s a lifestyle choice more often than not. The thought of how you will feed yourself and your child, how you will send them to school, how you can have dignity of labour and dignity of life, does not cross 60% of the population’s mind.
And that’s why no matter how long I live here, India will always be home. Because it’s not just about me there. It’s about everyone and everything. I’m trying hard to remind myself of that. On days when I feel it’s just about me, I try hard to remember, there’s more to life than just my tiny little problems. .
