Alfie's most extreme #beachcat
adventure yet! With his favourite activity climbing. Very proud of progress.
Today he wears a #puppia
dog harness, suitable for longer adventures that require mobility on days he won't be getting wet (he will refuse to swim/get wet with this harness).
Normally a calm beach day is not a problem. But one that's cloudy and windy with strong swells? I was really pushing his limits today, but he enjoyed climbing so much he didn't want to leave (watch to the end to see exactly what I mean).
For some, their cat may love adventures from the get go. For others it may take time to adjust or they may never like it. Alfie is in the middle camp. Everything you see him do has been built up over time (9 months together now) through context training and positive operant conditioning.
Alfie is naturally curious but also cautious. He's spongy with me and likes attention from 'nice' people/dogs (he'll look to me most times to determine if they are 'nice'), but is also prone to jealousy when other animals (esp cats) are involved and he's not the 'cutest'. He is easily distracted (esp birds), has a short temper (TOTAL DIVA) and not a big fan of trying new things.
It has taken a LOT of time, patience, dedication and compliments (not treats, compliments) to get to where we are today. Please know this, if you want to do something similar it comes with risks. Consider them carefully for your lifestyle. It's also a lot of hours, and like my friends - you may never have a beach loving cat. Alfie just likes the beach because he adores sand. Most prefer the bush - like Lynx. .
Climbing and fooling around like this is a big reason why I choose to free leash train Alfie was so I can have experiences like today. But please know if you go down this path most cats get grumpy when you put a leash on them. So free leash generally means a harder time when putting a leash on. I mitigate this by using 3 leash links so Alfie feels like he has the freedom of being unleashed when he is (never ever use a retractable if they are use to the freedom feeling).
