Here’s a look at a guy who loves to lift heavy weights. • The top is a guy who ate the Paleo diet and focused on the top 3 lifts, Deadlift (610), Bench(420) and Squats(435). • This version of myself “ate to lift heavy” and enjoyed following the Lift Big Eat Big movement. • The bottom picture is me today. Today, I enjoy lifting heavy but I will not sacrifice my nutrition to “carb up” or any other trick in the book. I focus on proper nutrition for a lifestyle that is sustainable. • Did you read that? At the end of everyday, I ask myself “how did I improve today?” . Our day, our lives are made up of a series of moments . Some are physical . Many are mental . And even emotional . Most encompass all 3 . It’s like the saying, it’s not the event itself but how we respond to them . Did we come away having gained experience to better prepare ourselves? . Did we maximize the down time to enrich our mental state? . Did we put forth maximum effort into physical obstacles to strengthen our resolve? . It’s not necessary to over analyze everything we face. Where to start with food tracking? 1. Download My Fitness Pal (MFP) 2. Set up your profile with your age, sex, height and weight under the goals section 3. Set up reminders in your phone to actually track your meals if you need them 4. Start scanning in what your eating at each meal 5. At the end of each day hit the “complete diary’ button 6. Look of your nutritional intake for the day to see where you ended for the day. 7. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. 8. Do this for about two weeks and make adjustments to protein carbs and fats so that you can learn your body and metabolism. My fitness pal is solely a calculator and will not know other important factors so rely on it as a tool but not your end all be all for calorie intake and macros. It is not a human being. I have seen it calculate calories on the lower end for most people. If you need help with more specific changes it may be a great time for you to invest in a coach like me or another qualified health professional but we all must start SOMEWHERE. 💡Knowledge is power- you should know what you are eating. This was one of the first steps to success. It’s hard to make changes when you don’t know where you are currently at. . I can’t lift right now because of my shoulder from the Tough Mudder. I’m having gym withdrawals & was getting a little discouraged. I would rather be in the beach right now... my grandmother is in the ER again and my pain medication messed up again so I can barely walk. 🙃 • Given the two "lovely" situations before me, I am going to try and reschedule tomorrow's exams to next week. 💥 My Current Workout Split 💥 Over my #transphormation I realized I don’t do well with a traditional body building split preplanned by someone else. I like creating workouts, it’s fun for me. But here is my current plan: I hit every muscle group once per week. I recently added in a 15-30 minute cardio session every other day. But the thing is, I listen to my body first. If I wasn’t planning on being sore in my triceps after a chest workout, I may postpone or skip them on arm day. I workout every day, for the most part, occasionally I will skip my workout due to time constraints or give myself time for recovery/holiday. Consistently switching up my program (traditional, body weight, Pilates, HIIT, interval training, jump rope, fun Instagram moves 😜) helps me stay motivated and keeps boredom at bay. I also use progressive overload to grow muscle and strength. 🌸 Pro tip: if you’re new to working out or can’t walk after leg day. Split up your muscle groups into 2 separate days: Butt/hams & quads/calves. My Why.. My motivation This pic is my profile pic and was taken at some point between tearing my left shoulder labrum and pulling something in my lower back. Injuries that have given me issues since 2012. The transphormation challenge has lit a 🔥 in me to finally start training again to compete. Something I was trying to do back in 2012 before the injuries. I’d like to see myself competing in a powerlifting competition but who knows if my body will hold up. || 🆓 || 🍁 A year ago today. Who would have thought my shirt would be more relevant now? 🍁 Not me... I honestly never thought about building my strength last year. My main focus was the number on the scale and trying to make it go down. 🍁 Fast forward a year where, I honestly don’t let it bother me as much as it did. Let’s be real. I’m human, and on a weight loss journey. So yes, there are going to be times where that number makes me mad. 🍁 The difference now is, I see that number and my first thought isn’t, “GAH! I’m getting fat!” It’s hmmm am I bloated? Is it that time of the month? Have I gained muscle? 🍁 It’s really freeing to step away from the numbers and focus on my body and how I feel. It’s taken me a lot of time, stress, tears and work to get to this mental state but it was worth it because now I can truly enjoy working on my physical state without my mind derailing me. #ThrowbackThursday 🍁💛
I was working on my steeper incline dumb bell press last night and was stoked to finally hit the 70lb mark. I got it for 8 reps the first time so obviously the next step is to jump to 80lb and see if I could get it. As you can see...it did NOT go as planned. But, even though I didn’t get it that was the highlight of my workout. I set a new PR and knew I didn’t settle for that and tried to beat it in the same workout. I have taken a week off to recover and tonight it’s time to get back to work 💪🏻 . I have completely revamped my training program and macros, I’ve pulled out all the stops and can’t wait to get back into it . Always remember to use weights and fitness and recover, while I’ll be doing chest tri’s and a bit of shoulders I will be continuing to use a weight belt for added lumbar support as well as throwing in a couple unweighted lower back exercises to build the strength back slowly and pay closer attention to form when back day hits tomorrow . Completely new cardio regime, and new macros and starting off leaner than I was a couple months ago I think I might finally get abs for Christmas 😂 . It’s Thursday!! It was shoulder, bicep, tricep day. My coach @brandolson had pointed out to me the other day how well I have done and how consistent I have stayed with this and insane results I had made so far. Thank you Brandon I appreciate that very much. It meant a lot to me that he even notices it. I honestly look at myself every day I don’t really pay as close of attention as I should and I am so hard on myself at times that I just don’t always see it so it’s nice when someone else notices and tells you your doing awesome job. So this morning I went to get my body "stats" to check my progress. I was so fucking angry and disappointed at what I saw. Numbers don't lie..so I said "fuck it!" and ate some fries..IT CHANGED NOTHING! So I quit my crying and got honest with myself.."How many cardio sessions did you miss?" And then I thought of @missnarmin and her attitude after @mrolympiallc. Your attitude was humble and you went back to work even harder ASAP! @missnarmin THANK YOU! You inspired me 🙌🏻💕 Not done yet so here I am working harder!
