During a meeting with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer regarding congressional funding of the border wall, President Trump declared, “If we don’t get what we want one way or another, whether it’s through you, through the military, through whatever you want to call, I will shut down the government.”
Congress intends to finalize spending before a Dec 21st deadline. If an agreement is not met by the deadline, nearly one-quarter of the government will be left without funding.
Trump and House Republicans asked for $5 billion towards the border wall in their proposed Homeland Security spending bill. Schumer and Pelosi both stated their opposition to funding a physical wall, but offered Democratic support of $1.6 billion for border security.
