“Time you enjoy waisting, is not wasted time”
I used to laugh at this quote and think about it as something that someone with too much time once said, only to justify its own laziness.
But when I got older and things in life didn’t get easier, I realized how important and true this quote is. For me, time spend on myself always seemed wasted and I perceived this time as something I have to feel guilty about. Even tho I low-key enjoyed this time spend on myself at first, there was this guilt and self hatred creeping up on me and I couldn’t enjoy it. Why couldn’t I enjoy the time and always had the feeling to fail when I didn’t do something productive? In my believe we are under such a pressure from begin on. We grow up in a world where we have to deliver, where we have to function and be perfect. I personally always felt like it was necessary to deliver, to be the perfect version of myself I wanted to be so badly. But how was that possible if I didn’t give myself time to relax and recover. Give myself time to discover what I want and what is good for me... I asked myself those questions and thought about a story I read. This person thought of self care as the airplane mask warning. When emergencies happen and the mask drops from the ceiling you are supposed to help yourself first. Then, proceed to help others to put on their masks. The idea behind this is that if you help others first, and fail, then there are two people out of commission. While if you take the time for a bit of self-care first (in the case of the plane putting on the gas mask) then you will be okay and in a position to help others more effectively or be more productive in other parts of your life! That’s exactly where it starts. Making yourself happy and spending time on yourself and your own needs is productive! It is the fuel that keeps you functioning during the rest of the time and it’s crucial for ones own happiness! Perceiving self-care and this happily “wasted” time as something positive and important is not a process that comes overnight. But always remember, you come first and you deserve time for yourself 💚
How do you perceive self-care? Is it easy for you?
1. Grow or cause to grow and become more mature, advanced or elaborate.
2. Start to exist, experience or possess.
