He Pretended He Wanted To Help Her Get Clean [#BlindGossip
] In a recent interview with The Guardian, singer #LilyAllen
describes how she was assaulted by a record industry executive in 2015, shortly after separating from her husband.
Allen had a problem with alcohol, diet pills, and coke, and the executive engaged her by pretending that he wanted to help her get clean.
The promotion and sale of her next single suffered as a result of the encounter.
She and [Sam] Cooper divorced, but not before he made her tell him about every single infidelity, because he needed to hear it all. They agreed to break up while sitting in a dark corner of their favourite Italian restaurant in the summer of 2015. As she describes it in the book, “We were both miserably sad. We were both in tears. We both felt some kind of relief.” There is no question that their love for each other was very real: she writes about the way they used to talk to each other when they met, and how he promised to look after her if she’d agree to calm down.
But by November 2015 she was trying to sort her life out alone. She met with a man who for legal reasons she calls Record Industry Executive (she wanted to name him; her publisher’s lawyers said no). Pretending to want to help her get clean, he got her drunk on tequila. The next day, she had a bad feeling; she didn’t remember getting home, but decided to write it off. She met up with him again for work, drink was involved, and woke up to find him trying to have sex with her in a hotel room. Again, Allen felt compelled to write it off, but she also went to her lawyer in London and signed an affidavit saying what happened.
Allen explains that she was offered a gig promoted by Radio 1 where one of the executive’s [other] artists would have been present, “so I had to turn it down. Because I didn’t want to be around him. And I got punished by Radio 1 with no airplay for my next single, Trigger Bang – I just couldn’t tell them why I couldn’t take the slot.” She is keen to stress that she isn’t the only artist who has been through such things, saying the music industry is “rife with sexual abuse”.
