*long emotional post*Top: August 2016. I had been working out steadily from home for over a year and lost close to 40lbs since 2009. This was the year my fitness life really changed because @fitclubva opened. This was the first real gym I’ve ever been to (since high school). Since then I’ve gone even further with my fitness and career; from being just a participant, to a trainer and instructor. The bottom: August 2018, I am down another 20(ish) pounds from 2 years ago and I am officially registered and in prep for my first figure competition with @ocbrichmondva. I am aware I have a long way to go, but my driving force is seeing where I began. I am not special. I am a mom, like so many others. I work full time, just like you. I have family obligations, just like you. I am a caregiver for my son. But these are all REASONS why I do what I do and try to help others. I’ve experienced the lows of depression. I have known true fear and loss. I have been beaten down and ridiculed. But in all of the things that I’ve experienced they do not make me a victim. They made me stronger. You can’t beat someone that never quits. I’ve quit before in life, in many things. But I will never quit on my family and I will never again quit on myself! So if you are struggling...know that you CAN do it. It WILL take time. But don’t let that scare you. Six weeks ago these ladies signed up for The Little Black Dress Challenge. In this bootcamp they were given meal plans that taught them clean eating. They were sent daily home workouts and weekly challenges as well as coming to the classes at The Fit Club. They trusted Angel and I with guiding them during their transformation. We did final weigh in with the average weight loss being 10lbs and the greatest being 20! To say I am proud of my ladies is such an understatement. I am overwhelmed by their dedication and determination. Last night we all put on our Little Black Dresses and had a ladies night out 💗 Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. This was....different. My gym just got the multi-grip bar and I have been have shoulder discomfort for about a month, so I decided to give it a shot. This is only 185 for 7. • • Pros: 1. The different angle did take the pressure off of my shoulder. 2. You can lower the bar and comfortably rest it on your chest for solid pauses. 3. Definitely gets a solid chest pump. Cons: 1. It takes some getting used to. (Not really a con, but I didn’t have anything else to put here.) • • Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. Oh. My. Wow. I had some real concerns about trying this recipe. Between the simplicity of it and some new-to-me ingredients (clam juice anyone?), I was fairly sure it was going to be a dud. Can y’all guess what I did today?! - If you guessed that I paid my dues and killed my body in the process, you would be absolutely correct. With Murph taking over my regularly scheduled squat day, I had to push squats to Tuesday. All week, I just knew that my squat day was supposed to be 70% light work and I wouldn’t have any issues. Got off work, opened my journal, and realized that I had never been more wrong in my life. Instead of 4 sets of 9 reps at 270lbs, I had 85%, 10 sets of 3 reps at 325lbs... - This was my 8th set. My eighth set of what felt like a million pounds. The suck was real from set 1 to set 10. But I had to push through and get my main lift in... so I did! Did I complain? Yes! Did I ask @barbell_barnes to do my last 8 sets for me? You’re damn right I offered it. Did he accept? No he did not... 10 sets and 40 minutes later, I prevailed! - Moral of the story, even when you don’t want to do something, if it is going to better your life, do it! When that last rep is weighing down on you, dig deep and find the strength to get it up! Exercising is not supposed to be comfortable. If you want your exercise to improve you in any way, it has to challenge you. Today, I was challenged! But I pushed through and finished. A few weeks ago Angel, myself and 38 women decided to dedicate ourselves to a 6 week Little Black Dress challenge. These women signed up without hesitation and have been willing to go the extra mile no matter what we threw their way! We all come from different walks of life but you’d think we had known each other forever. Today we completed our 2nd bootcamp class, some ladies couldn’t make it but they are getting in their workout at home! We are harder on these ladies than what we are in our normal classes. Y’all know what HEAT is like! My girls have never complained, they dance between station sets and cheer each other on, sweat dripping and all! I cannot begin to express how proud I am of each and every one of them. I am so thankful we get to join them in this journey. Today was a great day! I checked the mailbox before going to the gym and @1stphorm came through in the clutch! When I saw that the #WeBackTheBlue T-shirt’s were in stock, I didn’t waste any time! I got mine today and the material feels great, the fit is incredible, and the meaning behind the shirt has sentimental value to me with me being a LEO! • • Today was chest day so I got my main lift knocked out of 80% benchpress 7 sets of 5. Crushed that, and added some good accessory work afterwards. What I did differently today was I finished my lift with a 50 minute #HIIT Heat session! 6 stations, 2 exercises per station, 2 minutes per exercise, 1 minute of rest every 4 minutes. I gotta tell y’all, @shannon_r_anderson definitely kicked mine and 18 women’s asses today. Yes, I was the only guy in the class today, but these women in this class straight up rose to the challenge and crushed it! By the end of it, I was drenched in sweat from my hat to my socks! The pump was definitely real! The results you get out of this type of thing is solely based on the effort you put into it. My heart rate today stayed pretty steady at 165bpm. • • Moral of the story, if you want results, put in the effort! Also, happy #nationalpoliceweek ! Flashback Friday!!!! The top two pictures are from 2015 when I started my fitness journey for the SECOND time. I haven’t stopped since. The bottom two are this month. Over 40lbs lost. I can’t even tell you how many inches (you can’t see a lot because I covered myself well) body fat in the upper 30’s down to 15%. How did I do this? Beachbody programs to start, then working with a trainer, then becoming certified myself and doing countless hours of work and research and a lot of motivation. Today was a long day. It seemed like the calls just kept rolling in one after another. But I made it to the end of that 12 hours and carried my happy ass to the gym. It’s training max week and I did not perform admirably on Tuesday with my bench dropping 30lbs from last cycle. I’m chalking that decrease in weight to just being a bad lifting day. We all have them, it happens. But the reason I’m posting this post is about perseverance. For the past 6 months, my training max for deadlift would not go above 405. It’s like I was stuck. I had some major setbacks with deadlift in the past couple of months, with straining my lower back twice. But today, I was determined to get over the hump. After my warm-up sets, I threw 405 on the bar just to get that out of the way. That set is the first video. Instead of microweighting my way past 405, I decided to go for 415 for 3. That’s the second video! The fist pump at the end is pure joy. Your mind will always quit before your body does. Absolutely did not want to be in the gym today. But I picked myself up and took my ass to the gym. This is the start of my training max week where I get my top set of 3 in my squat, bench, deadlift, and OHP. My previous top set for squat was 365, but today I dug deep and got 385 and left about 2 reps in the tank. • • A training max week is a gauge for your lifting cycle on the program that I am currently on. For the next 4 weeks, I will have varying sets at 70%, 75%, 80%, and 85%. Since I started this program over a year ago, my lifting power has steadily risen. The jumps aren’t usually 20lbs, like this cycle, but they’re significant enough to be proud of. This lifting program doesn’t suit everyone, but if you’re a seasoned lifter with about 2-4 years or more under your belt, I highly recommend it. #FF @mattogus , his program #Ogus753 is a great improvement program. It has definitely worked wonders on me. • • The fact of the matter is, if you don’t put in the work, you won’t get results. Simple as that. Do. The. Work! Results are not an overnight thing. That’s where most people that I have talked to have issues. They give up before their body has a chance to show them their rewards. Here are a couple factoids, it takes about 2-3 weeks for others to notice the change in your body that you will continue to be blind to. At about 6 weeks is when your brain will begin to recognize your bodily change. Doing 100 sit-ups for a week and not seeing abs is not a reason to give up. With a solid nutritional plan and a solid exercise routine, after about 6 weeks, you won’t be able to quit because you’ll notice the subtle changes it. I am far from where I want to be but I’m also leaps and bounds from where I started. I owe a lot of my success to my post workout nutrition. What you do post-workout is essential to your overall success! Immediately after lifting heavy, I put two extremely important things in my body: 1. Phormula-1 protein.
