It was another Friday evening at Coronado 4 stop lures. The hype of #PokemonGo
had been going strong. People were set up camping with lawn chairs, blankets, families crossing back and forth - crazy trainers 👟 with their heads down darting up and down Orange Ave. with everyone enjoying the lures. This was 2 years ago today by the way, August 19th, 2016.
I had been hunting for my first Lapras now intently for at least a solid month and a half. Lucky me I live in San Diego and Coronado was just a bridge of a drive away.
We didn’t have any strong scanners or anything at this point, we all just knew Lapras was known to spawn in Coronado. My Team Valor buddy and I would enjoy about an hour and a half every Friday down in Coronado in hopes of a Lapras spawn. Some diehards had GoRadar which was basically a really crap scanner that at the time was 50/50 with its reporting. But GoRadar or not, on a Friday night the whole Coronado Island was lit with trainers roaming. From Orange Ave to Ferry Landing (East Side) to Hotel Del Coronado (West) & Dog Beach (North West) people were always out there grinding for Dratini, Karps etc.
We had decided to hang around the 4 stop lures that day and maybe about 6 minutes into us standing around cracking jokes about finally getting a Lapras after hours of lurking San Diego’s Pokemon Go FaceBook about Lapras reports it happened. Someone shouted “Lapras!” By now you could tell whether it was a troll announcement or the real thing. I had asked someone where it was and they said Hotel Del Coronado. So my buddy and I ran to my car & took off. On the way we saw someone we had met for a bit and offered him a ride - he didn’t accept so we kept going! I could see from the distance that there wasn’t going to be any parking. This was slightly after sunset so it wasn’t completely dark yet at all but the clouds did block the sun from giving ample light. I pulled up to the curb and handed my phone to my buddy who ran onto the beach near the Hotel Del. I zoomed off and found parking & ran to the beach. I was hoping he had tagged it and left it for me to catch. I remember a ton of people in pure joy having caught their first Lapras. I saw my buddy
