“Did you always see yourself as a leader?” This question was asked of me when I spent the morning with leaders of the @iowastatesoccer
team. What a deep question for 8am! BUT, if you really think about it, what an important question to ask.
My answer; No and Yes.
No I didn’t see myself as a leader when I walked onto my college campus. Why? Because I was insecure. I didn’t feel I belonged. I worried too much about what other people thought. I felt my performance alone dictated the voice I could have on my team. And in turn, I stayed in the shadows. On the outer rims just trying to see inside.
BUT when I said YES. When I decided that YES being a college athlete is important to me. YES my team is important to me. YES I want to be better than I am at this moment. THAT is when I saw myself as a leader.
I never had to be the fastest. I had to be me. I had to bring my commitment, my passion, my best self because that’s what my team needed. And ultimately, it’s what I needed. Because once I saw myself as a leader, I became better. Better on the track and so much more fulfilled off it.
Once I decided who I was and what was important to me, I let go of pretend, of worry, of the shadows.
And I’m certain this isn’t only my reality. It is yours too. You don’t need to be the leading scorer, the loudest voice, the girl with the most accolades. You simply need to choose what matters most to you.
So tonight, I’m asking you; “do you see yourself as a leader of your team?” #playyou
