Birmingham police surrounded entrances to St. Vincent's Hospital on Saturday afternoon after a man called the hospital with suicidal thoughts.
Around 2 p.m. Saturday, police responded to St. Vincent's after employees reported a man calling the hospital, saying he had a gun and threatening to kill himself.
Birmingham police and tactical units started searching for the man when they arrived, Sgt. Johnny Williams said, but found no trace of him by 5:30 p.m.
Williams said the man's calls consisted solely of threats to himself, not anyone inside the hospital. He made several calls to the hospital, but no employees have spotted the man, Williams said.
The hospital is not on lockdown, but police are monitoring the streets surrounding the campus to monitor who comes in and out of the area.
