It is not uncommon to have symptoms in the upper back that it is often described as thoracic or peri scapular pain. Discomfort in this area is often attributed to trigger points in the rhomboids or ribs being out of place. I’ve discussed these topics in the past, but I’ll just briefly say that our ribs do not go out of place unless a traumatic or serious pathological mechanism is involved. As for that “knot”? If you’ve been rolling it or sticking your back against the corner of a wall with no relief, read on.
Pain in the thoracic spine region is most commonly associated with the neck and may present with concurrent symptoms of neural tension in the upper extremities. The best way to approach this is going to be education and activity modification. Find the things that exacerbate your symptoms and see if can you change something about them. Oftentimes it’s just a matter of moving more.
I’ve also included some exercises that address the neck, thoracic spine, and shoulders. Get them moving with the first four exercises and follow it up with some strengthening of the neck and shoulders in the last exercise. Do these for 10-15 minutes at a time periodically throughout the week and hopefully you’ll notice an immediate change in symptoms.

110kg 5 X 5 comp pause bench.
This was after squat sets of 165kg for 5 X 5 so I was definitely low on gas. However I still got the reps in. Work continues.
Having the time of my life today! Just took 2nd place in the heavyweight for distance at the biggest comp I’ve ever done.
I can't be the only person who was really upset when the Independence crashed, and it looked like Bear might not survive, in Armageddon. And don't even get me started on Max. Threw in some arm stuff after my lower body training, because thick thighs save lives, and you have to do two arm exercises for every one you do for legs. Everyone knows that. It's in the Geneva Convention. Look it up.

I see so many back injury posts every day! Traditional medicine and therapy has failed many of us, myself included.
Go to the Dr for back pain, spend 15min with him.
Get pain meds, now it doesn’t hurt (this is picking the ‘scab’.)
Get worse, get an MRI but the radiologist never meets you to know what you do, how you’re built or what to look for.
See a PT (a good one if you’re lucky) start to get better but don’t address basic movement patterns- picks the scab more.
Go back to DR. and get shots, feel pain free but REALLY PICK THE SCAB.
After a month of being pain-free you’re suddenly debilitated and hurting worse.
Make an appointment with orthopedic or neurosurgeon for back surgery.

Colton earned himself a bronze medal in the very competitive 83kg class today and he qualified for the USAPL Highschool National Championships in the process.
I first met @coltonwells1
and his family at the FFW Winter Classic in February and shortly after was granted the opportunity to train with him. Since his platform performance 6 months ago, he has made some amazing progress. Maintaining the same weightclass and adding nearly 200 pounds to his total. He has certainly shown that he is willing to put in the work. Rest assured, there will be many more big things to come from this young man.
