As I’ve now taken to embark onto the next stage of my BJJ journey. 🥋 ————————————————————- I’m beginning to adapt some things with my own personal S&C programming in order to assist me when I’m on the mat. 👌 ————————————————————- My current focus and something I’m working on this week is GRIP. 🤝 ————————————————————- Especially when competing in the GI, grip is a very important factor with a match. Lose the grip you lose the opponent. 🤷‍♂️ ————————————————————- For now I’m just modifying how I change typical, daily used pieces of equipment in the gym and make it benefit me within my chosen sport. 🏋🏻‍♂️ ————————————————————- My next step, start using my GI jacket as wrapping for the handles/equipment. 💪 ————————————————————- If you currently train in a gym and your also looking at improving within a sport you frequently play. Then have a good read through your training program (if you have one that is) and try to justify whether or not these methods/exercises as transferable to your sport. ————————————————————- Example; are HEAVY dumbbell presses to failure supersetted with medicine balls slams for time beneficial for a cricket player? It’ll get your JACKED AND SWOLL for you to wear a tight white shirt of a Friday night. Time to brag about another client who's a complete badass. So it's @gill_wills1 turn. . From day 1 of coaching Gill, she's always had problems with her knees, they were pretty much fucked. . For a while wearing knee wraps helped with squatting but it got to the point where it wasn't working anymore. . Over the past month, we managed to rehab the knees to the point where she could squat 70 for 5 (PB was 77.5 for 3 in wraps) and 60 for sets of 10, to better depth than ever before with naked knees, and more importantly no pain. At all. . Unfortunately, there was a bit of a flare up a few days after that mega session. Guess what causes absolutely no knee pain though... Heavy sled work! We tried pushing the prowler in the last session before her holiday and there were no issues at all. So the video is 100kg on the prowler with no pain. . If you swipe across you can also see the aftermath of some prowler sprints to finish the session. . Fun fact: I've trained Gill for around 18 months, and I can count the number of times we've finished a training session without Gill saying "I hate you" (usually accompanied with a lot of profanity) on one hand... I can't imagine why 😉

What sort of shoes do you train in? . From what we’ve seen, this is something most people don’t give much thought to, but it’s worth thinking about, especially if you’re serious about your training. . Most people train in standard joggers/sneakers, which is fine, it’s not like you’re at an increased risk of injury or anything because of this. However, these joggers/sneakers have a lot of cushioning on the bottom, as they’re designed to lessen impact/absorb force, which is all well and good while you’re jumping or waking/running, but when you’re squatting/deadlifting (or any exercise where your feet are fixed to the ground), your goal is to apply as much force into the ground as possible, that extra cushioning can take away from your ability to apply force into the ground. You want to be pushing down against a hard surface, so you either want flat sole shoes, or bare foot is another option! . Training barefoot (you can keep your socks on 😂) is probably the best option, but I know not all gyms approve of this, so flat sole shoes (eg chucks), or weightlifting shoes (as seen in the pic) would be the next best options! Obviously, weightlifting shoes are shoes that are specifically designed for weightlifting. Notice the raised heel, to increase ankle range of motion (poor ankle range of motion limits squatting ability). The base of the shoe is also solid, with little to no cushioning. . The last and most important factor is comfort, if you’re comfortable, then you’re more likely to enjoy your training, which is the most important thing! . If you can, try different shoes/going barefoot, to feel the difference! . The 1-arm standing landmine row to press is a great dynamic variation to standard dumbbell work. — Because the weight is moving at the beginning of the press, these can be loaded pretty heavy (but you need to be smooth and intentful through the hand switch transition). — I would consider these a preparatory exercise that is in the same category as a clean or snatch, but far more appropriate for a rotational athlete. — The learning curve is almost none existent, and the force production, transfer, and vectors are more conducive to a rotational overhead athlete (meaning they would also be great for tennis, volleyball, and lacrosse). — Use 3-6 sets of 4-8 reps per side. Because of how explosive these can be, it’s best to bioregulate and cut the sets off when form or bar speed drop off noticeably. — Give them a try, and let me know what you think!
Broadly, pulling movements can be classified as either vertical (eg pull-ups, lat pulldowns, etc.) or horizontal (eg chest supported rows, bent over rows, etc.). . Both movement patterns need to be trained, however, more emphasis should be placed on horizontal pulling movements. The reason being, vertical pulling is very lat dominant and your lats internally rotate the shoulders, as do your pecs, so if you’re really strong through your pecs and lats, your shoulders will be stuck in internal rotation, which will likely lead to shoulder issues. Horizontal pulling movements and specific upper back work should be prioritised. . In saying that, you still want to train vertical pulling movements and you want to do so the same as you would any other movements; vary the load and rep ranges. Particularly with pull-ups and chin-ups, don’t be afraid to load them up! Most people get stuck just trying to do millions of reps ever week. Vary the stimulus, drop the reps down and add some load, to ensure you continue to progress. . Landing is a skill! Athletes need to be taught how to land! And they need to practice landing regularly, so that the motor pattern becomes ingrained! . As the @scienceforsport quote infers, poor landing mechanics often have more to do with technique than strength! They are referring specifically to females, but all athletes need to be taught how to land. . The second picture highlights the key things to focus on when landing. Focus on landing as soft as possible, gently absorbing all of the force. Land with your hips flexed, knees flexed, ankles flexed and knees out! To build this skill, initially practice getting in this position and develop isometric strength, then gradually progress to dropping from heights. . Q: What is your simplest deadlift tip? . A: Good morning RealFITT community! I hope that your week is off to a busy start. As always thank you for taking the time to read my answer to this question about the deadlift. Let’s get to it. . The deadlift can be a highly effective movement for building lower body and longitudinal chain strength. It’s a functional compound movement that targets large muscle groups and when used correctly can certainly raise your strength game. . My tip/s for the deadlift this week is to first find out how suitable you are for the movement. There are a few different tests you can do, including a broomstick bow. This will give you an idea of how well you move through the desirable patterns of hip, knee, and ankle flexion and extension, whilst holding the correct torso and head position - the major requirements for the deadlift. Please ask your coach to take you through this if you haven’t already done it and you’re planning on deadlifting. . Once you have some information on your suitability for deadlifting, then consider whether you need or want to be doing it. If you don’t take it seriously the potential for injury in this movement can be high. . If you decide that you want or need to be doing it, then my tip is that it doesn’t have to be done off the floor for it to be effective. You can deadlift off pins or blocks anywhere from 10-20cms (or more) above the floor and this will likely allow you to experience the movement with less risk. From this position you will learn to stabilise and hold your torso in the correct position, whilst extending through the knees and hips, as well as getting almost all of the benefits of deadlifting off the floor. Shoulder Mobility Drill . Improving your overhead (OH) position has multiple factos but one could be your thoracic spine (T-spine) extension. There isn't a great deal of extension within the T-spine but not being able to express the avaliable extension will cause issues when pressing over head. Another factor related to the T-spine and OH positioning will be the T-spine rotation. Something to discuss later. . TECHNIQUE: place the roller on your mid back, keep the hips on the floor, take a deep breath in and slowly arch back on the roller. Once you've reached your limit exhale and come back to the start position. Repeat this 10 times. Baseball was everything I knew myself to be up until the end of college when the career ended and I literally didn’t know who I was or what I was going to do. Lots of eggs in the that basket and I “didn’t go to play school” is what cool Collin would say. Lucky to have found a path and a passion after the fact. It feels like a brand new chapter and I still get to be a part of the sport that made me who I am today and provided me with friends and experiences I wouldn’t have found otherwise.
