🐒 Milo the Monkey
Our first session was a success! Today children participated in reading the story Milo the Monkey, and learning about the letters M, F, S, A, C, P, T, and I.
The children participated in activities exploring letter names and sounds, and identifying initial and final sounds in words. The children also explored onset rime and compound words.
Each child also had a go at tracing some letters and identifying these letters in simple words.

Teaching Children to Compare and Contrast
Another great (and important) skill to teach young language learners is that of comparing and contrasting one object with another.
This practice enables children to recognize similarities and differences, develops their vocabulary, and helps them practice the usage of adjectives (like we discussed the other day). It also helps with categorization – an essential tool for keeping our brains organized.
Children pick up understanding of these concepts just through our everyday speech, but, if you sense that your child is struggling with making these comparisons (ex. while it is common for toddlers to call all objects with wheels a “car,” by the age of two and a half, they should be able to recognize and identify the differences between a car, a bicycle, and a wagon). Some beginning objects to compare and contrast with your child are: • Cat/dog • Apple/banana • Soap/toothpaste • Nose/mouth • Bee/butterfly • Sock/shoe • Airplane/bus
And the list goes on…we could spend all day thinking up fun comparisons to share with our students.

Food Throwing || Here’s my sweet Nora getting acquainted with @mealswithmilton
tonight ☺️|| Nora is 15 months- just about the age where we see start to see food throwing get out of hand 😳|| Luckly, we have @mealswithmilton
in our home, ready to swoop in and teach us some new behaviors || So, here’s what we do: as we near the end of the meal, when she’s getting more full and less interested in the remaining foods on her tray, I pull out #mealswithmilton
and model feeding him pieces || Instead of focusing on the “no” or “stop”, I tell her “give it to Milton” 👍🏻 I redirect those little hand right into his mouth || Tonight we did this, and I watched as she continued to feed her new friend, and then went back to feeding herself 🙌🏻🙌🏻 || Giving your little one a fun place to put food when they’re getting tired of eating can make such a difference 😁|| Purchase your Milton via the website link in my profile 👆🏻|| Your floors will thank me 😂

Food Fun! 🥨🍎🍽🙌 Our Food Explorers are doing a great job learning to interact with, touch and taste new foods. Each week they are introduced to foods of varying textures, shapes, colours and flavours. Through play, they are encouraged to progress through the Steps to Eating, with no pressure to eat. Their parents are doing a fantastic job supporting these new skills.
We will be running Food Explorers again in Term 4. Stay tuned for more information!

🤦♀️: today’s post is dedicated a women who has inspired me and shaped my career. To my dear friend, mentor & co-author Professor Rhea Paul. Who has one of her books? To those of us in the SLT/SLP childhood world, we know that Professor Rhea Paul is a rock star & legend. Her book on language disorders now in its 5th edition is on every SLPs bookshelf. I have one from 1995 😆 (yes it was my bedtime reading when I was 7)! I first met Rhea when I was a professor at Hunter College in the Early Childhood Special Education Department. I was honored when she asked me to co-author a chapter on assessment for the Autism Handbook and later we published our first book together, #LetsTalk
. I am so grateful for the work we’ve done together & for the opportunity to work with such a legend. Over the last seven or so years I would often go up to visit her @sacredheartuniversity
& while waiting in the car for my train back to Grand Central, we would share some cake and have the most wonderful conversations about research, therapy, resources, Netflix, & our favorite podcasts (serial being one of them). It was the conversations in the car that inspired us to record our first Podcast #LetsTalkSuperSpecialKids
Thank you Rhea for all that you have done for the speech & language therapists of the world, for the books & articles you have written to guide us in our practice but mostly for being such an incredible role model, friend & for your unique contribution to our field. Looking back, I now know what Rumi meant when he said, “The gift is what is beyond the imagination”. Meeting you & working with you has indeed been a gift! Thank you 💕

Όταν όμως βγάλαμε στο γραφείο τη σημαία του ΠΑΟΚ και συμφωνήσαμε να την "μασκαρέψουμε" λιγάκι και να παίξουμε μαζί της, το χαμόγελο ήρθε πάλι στη θέση του. Σκοπός της άσκησης διαδοχοκίνησης είναι να εκτιμηθεί με πόση συνέπεια, ακρίβεια και ταχύτητα μπορεί κάποιος να εκτελέσει γρήγορες, επαναλαμβανόμενες κινήσεις. Αξιολογούνται, έτσι, οι αρθρωτικές δομές ξεχωριστά και ο στοματοκινητικός μηχανισμός ως σύνολο. Η κλισέ φράση - ψευδολέξη (σε επίπεδο 3 συλλαβών) που χρησιμοποιείται είναι το "ΠΑΤΑΚΑ" (/π/ -> μπροστινό τμήμα και σύμπραξη χειλέων, /τ/ -> μεσαίο τμήμα και σύμπραξη γλώσσας και οδόντων, /κ/ -> οπίσθιο μέρος σύμπραξη υπερώας). Σε περιπτώσεις όπου το παιδί τρομάζει, κολλάει ή δυσκολεύετε με την ψεύτικη αυτή λέξη, δοκιμάστε άλλες, είτε πραγματικές (π.χ. πατάκι) είτε μη, όπως κάναμε εμείς! Το πράσινο μπαλόνι έριξε από ψηλά το /τ/ και το μπλε το /α/... ο ΠΑΟΚ έγινε ΠΑΤΟΚΑ κι εμείς γελάσαμε εκτελώντας την επαναλαμβανόμενη άσκηση χωρίς καν να ψιλιαστούμε ότι κάποιος αξιολογεί τις στοματοκινητικές μας δεξιότητες. Συν τοις άλλοις, με την κίνηση αυτή, αποβάλαμε το συνοδό άγχος της "εξέτασης".

BOYS AND GIRLS. THEY CAN BE WHATEVER THEY WANT TO BE. PERIOD .
