Franz Josef Heli Hike, Part 1/3 – Chopper to the glacier 🚁
The next day was a big one. Depending on the weather, it was either going to be the most adrenaline packed day of my life, or one of the most disappointing! We rose early, meeting at 8am hoping for some good news about a heli hike we had signed up to do that morning. It would involve a helicopter trip up to the Franz Josef glacier where we would get to hike on the glacier itself for a while before being whisked back to town by helicopter.
Fortunately, we were told it would be going ahead; so, with massive grins on our faces, we got ourselves changed into the hiking gear given to us before taking a walk to the nearby airfield (📸 #1

We boarded the chopper in military fashion and donned our headsets so that the pilot could talk to us (📽 #3
). He took us on about a 5-minute flight to the glacier (📽 #4
&5), giving us a brief history lesson en route, before landing on a tiny makeshift helipad made of ice on the glacier (📽 #6
). The flight was a surreal experience as you could really feel all the movements of the vehicle and it was much faster and nimble than any plane I had been in before!
