Thakhek loop: the good, the bad, and the ugly
Day 1 - we got our scooters and headed for the open road. The scenery was limestone cliffs and mountains. This stretch had many caves, which we stopped at two, one with a bright blue lagoon inside. We had a challenging hike up a mountain to a viewpoint. We visited a lake with the mountains in the backdrop. And ended our day with a hike to a waterfall. We watched the sunset as we headed to the town we would stay in for the night, Nakai. We arrived just in time for sunset, cracked open a beer, and cheered to a successful first day.
The good - I got my bearings with riding the bike and gained confidence. This wasn’t so hard. The nature around us was really great and got to see many of the local villages as we passed through. The road was good, some potholes, dogs, cows and chickens to avoid, waved as the children shouted ‘Saibadee’, but all in all, a good and not so strenuous first day.
