It really does feel magical here (the only thing that was missing was snow)✨❄️
What is wellness?
Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth. 🌿 ..... “A conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential." - The National Wellness Institute
What are your wellness goals for 2019? 💭
This week marked 6 months at my new job, and it has been a whirlwind of learning, growth, developing a renewed sense of boundaries for myself and others, and a million other really incredible things.
I found out last week I'm going to be promoted to Program Manager, with more responsibility and a chance to use my skillset in a different way. I'm incredibly excited, nervous, and eager to keep moving the mission forward to the very best of my ability. I want to make sure it's worth the chance they're all taking on me, and I want to make it worth it for the people who will be depending on me to get the job done.
Today I'm at home reflecting on the things I'll need to do to juggle everything in this next chapter of my life. It's a little (a lot) intimidating, to be certain. I know my INFJ personality type has definitely found its home in this field--but that comes with its own set of challenges. Altruism is in my DNA. And social work can exacerbate that if I don't hold space for myself, which, my personality type isn't great at doing. So I want to commit this year to learning balance in that--especially as I take on this new role.
As the incredible Joy Hardiman once said in a lecture I was lucky enough listen to: "If I 'ain't growin' I'm goin'." And I'm so, so grateful I've found an organization I can beautifully grow with for years to come.

Before and after. BSW 2017, to (L)MSW 2018. Getting my hood was one of the coolest things. I might just start wearing it with every outfit! 💁🏼♀️#LMSW #MavGrad2018 #UTASSW #socialwork
As a social worker, even though I don’t hold the degree *yet* (forever a grad student), I often feel like a pit for emotions to pour into or vending machine of services. This week has been a rough one with stories of challenges, dysfunction, heartache, and loss more than I could ever imagine experiencing personally. As an empathetic person I soak up these emotions like a sponge from other people and at times my spirit curls up in a ball on the inside. However, in the midst of all of it is a story; one I want to hear and tell and help heal. Soul work brings a lot of beauty, but I’m definitely feeling the growing pains.

lens today... y’all: SELF CARE ISN’T SELFISH!!! I honestly used to think self care was an overused “millennial” term (I’m a millennial so I swear I’m not hating haha!) but seriously you can’t pour from an empty cup. Experts say you should have self care activities/practices in several main realms: physical, spiritual, emotional, psychological, and social. Here are some self care pieces that are super important to me in no order: - Physical fitness
- Skincare - Social time with friends and family - Spending time outside
- Spirituality practices ...And more but those are some big ones. What are some self care practices you engage in? I’d love to hear ideas!! #selfcare #socialwork #skincare #skincaregoals #selfcareisntselfish #friendsandfamily #socialworker
Over the years, I have worked with countless individuals who experience memory problems. Dementia is such a challenging disease both for the individual and their loved ones.
One woman that I visited was able to still carry on a conversation at times. Like many individuals with dementia, she was able to remember experiences from when she was young much better than what took place today.
I asked her about what her life was like when her children were young. She replied, “I visit that memory every once in awhile.
She cannot remember these memories consistently. But, at times, she gets to visit the memory before losing it again.
I found this was a beautiful way to describe memory loss.
Every single one of our grant recipients has an income below 138% of the Federal poverty level. In 2017, this was just $16,753 annually for a single woman, or $34,638 for a family of four. In addition to their financial struggles, many come from difficult backgrounds littered with personal and social obstacles. And nearly half are the first in their families to attend college. Every single one of our grant recipients has not only persevered in spite of these facts, but thrived. And with your support, we can continue our legacy of lifting them up through higher education. I've been coming here at least once a week since I arrived in SF a little over two months ago, running in and out of work meetings. It took me maybe a month to actually start exploring the San Francisco Main Library and taking time to appreciate its gorgeous architecture. So today I finally got myself the library card! The process was crazy easy, and I feel like I'm going to come to work here sometimes...
On top of providing books and movies, the SF public library fulfills a real role of social work. Open to all in the most disadvantaged neighborhood of SF, it's accessible to people with all types of disabilities, provide resources for non English speakers, has fun workshops for children and adults, and it's a general point of human contact for the homeless population. They step in to give much needed services to the local community and do an amazing work at it! #librariansrock
