On Friday 21st September 2018, the AAPGYPTT led a field visit for Schlumberger to the Los Iros Disaster Zone. Their group comprised of individuals with from wireline operations, subsurface, information solutions, facilities managment and even mud engineering. The AAPGYPTT introduced the group to the deformation features that our team has observed in the area since the earthquake. We related the timeline of events and gave possible explanations as to how these features may have formed. The Schlumberger group observed slickensides, offset roadways and farmland, the heavily faulted driveway at the famers house, the thrust deformation on the beach and the evidence of ancient mud flows and ongoing mud volcanism. Simultaneously the AAPG conducted a trial test on using a handheld geiger counter to determine the location of faults. Preliminary results thus far are encouraging - stay tuned for details. The AAPG YP TT thorougly enjoyed hosting Schlumberger for this trip and for the opportunity to have our observations, learnings and models, shared throughout their organisation. For #mineralmonday here are some #hematite #slickensides from the #paintedhills in #oregon . These formed during faulting of Eocene age laterite soils. Laterites are found in hot and humid tropic environments, and demonstrate that the climate of Oregon was much different than today. This week for #TectonicTuesday we’re in Girvan in Scotland. The photo shows #slickensides that are mineral fibres and steps that tell us the direction of #fault movement. In this case the fault has moved horizontally and to the right. For scale you can just see the tip of a hammer in the top left. ⭐Hi Rockstars! Being able to recognize little geological hints in the field is an important skill for all Rockstars. Slickenlines are one great example of a feature that the observant Rockstar can take note of and glean valuable information from! 😁 Slickenlines are features found on the surface of a fault. That’s right, they’re found on the slip surface of a fault! There are actually two very similar features, known as slickensides and slickenlines. A slickenside is a very fine-grained, polished surface along a fault plane, polished by the actual movement of the rocks against each other. A slickenline is a lineation on the feature, which can tell us the orientation of movement of one side of the fault relative to the other! The lineation can be caused by a few things, such as a simple asperity that gouges the surface of the fault, abrasion of larger grains into pulverized rock, or precipitation of mineral fibers (Twiss & Moores, 2007). Combined with a marker layer which can suggest which side of the fault moved up or down, a slickenline gives us a powerful indicator of the potential movement of the fault, as much as a 2D feature can. 🤓 Keep in mind though, that they are not good indicators of the amount of displacement of the fault! They are of most use when at some angle to the observable fault surface, giving additional vector information in conjunction with marker layers in other axes. For example, observing a fault in an outcrop, a Rockstar might suggest a simple normal fault due to the displacement of an obvious marker rock down on the hanging wall. On closer inspection, the fault surface reveals slickenlines pointing outwards from the outcrop! This would then prompt our astute Rockstar to investigate the possible movement of the fault not only in the normal regime, but also the strike-slip! 😍 Until next time, Rockstars – enjoy our photos of slickensides and slickenlines from core samples!! 😘 ------------ Sources: Twiss, R. Getting down and dirty inside a volcanic crater for a week straight might just be a volcanologist’s dream come true! This photograph shows Betsy Friedlander measuring the dimensions and orientations of slickensides inside the crater of Mount St Helens while on a scientific field trip. The crater of Mount St Helens, a stratovolcano in Washington State (USA), was made famous by its devastating explosive eruption in 1980, which was triggered by a landslide that removed most of the volcano’s northern flank. Between 2004 and 2008 Mount St Helens experienced another type of eruption – this time effusive (where lava flowed out of the volcano without accompanying explosions). Effusive eruptions produce lava flows that can either be runny (low-viscosity) or much thicker (high viscosity). Sometimes, the erupting lava can be so rigid that it juts out of the volcano as a column of rock, known as a spine. The 2004 to 2008 eruption at Mount St Helens saw the extrusion of a series of seven of these spines. These spines are generally unstable and tend to collapse after eruption, making it difficult to characterise their outer surfaces in detail and safely. Luckily, Mount St Helens provided an opportunity for a group of researchers to go into a volcanic crater and characterise these fault surfaces. [SERI GEOLOGI STRUKTUR] . . Foto diatas adalah kenampakan cermin sesar/ slickensides di Kecamatan Karangkobar, Kabupaten Bajarnegara. Slickensides adalah salah satu bukti terkuat di lapangan yang menandakan bahwa daerah tersebut terkena struktur selain breksiasi akibat sesar (gouge, tachylyte, cataclasite, argille scagliose, mylonite) dan lipatan seret. Pengertian slickensides sendiri menurut van der Pluijm dan Marshak, 2004, adalah permukaan sesar yang terpoles halus akibat proses gesekan antarbatuan. Masa batuan yang saling bergesekan menyebabkan kedua sisi yang bergesekan meninggalkan jejak berupa gores garis yang halus. Slickensides pada foto tersingkap di bagian footwall bidang sesar dan diisi oleh mineral kalsit (warna putih) yang sumbunya terletak parallel terhadap permukaan bidang sesar. . . Menemukan slickensides di lapangan tidaklah mudah, apalagi di Indonesia yang beriklim tropis ini erosi berlangusng sangat intens. Maka dari itu, untuk mempermudah mendapatkan data-data pendukung struktur geologi di lapangan, analisis geomorfologi sebelum berangkat ke lapangan adalah hal yang wajib dilakukan. Menentukan pola kelurusan sungai, analisis pola pengaliran sungai, analisis rasio percabangan sungai dalam satu DAS, analisis topografi, dan penentuan sinusitas muka punggungan, adalah hal yang dapat membantu kita untuk mendeteksi di daerah mana saja yang kira-kira terdapat bukti lapangan struktur geologi berupa cermin sesar. . . Slickensides Slickensides are striations along the rock face (looking like scratches). In this example, they to be a lighter colour than the Pre-Cambrian rocks they are on. They occur on both surfaces creating polished, linear grooves parallel to the direction of movement.
