Day 1061. Like coming around a corner and gasping at the last-light-of-day on the bones of a weathered tree, understanding can take you by surprise. I was the first of my siblings to seek higher education and went away to college. My younger sisters wrote me letters of news and encouragement. Reminiscing recently, I remembered those letters with affection. However, that was not how one of my 'little' sisters remembered HER letter to me. She said she struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia-like symptoms and had labored over her letter. With a tone of some resignation she said, "yes, I remember the letter I wrote to you. You corrected my spelling and grammar." She had been embarrassed and I had forgotten my act of 'helpful' arrogance. "By what strange law of mind is it, that an idea long overlooked, and trodden under foot as a useless stone, suddenly sparkles out in new light as a discovered diamond?" (Harriet Beecher Stowe, American author, 1800s) I hope I am better able to see through the struggle to the heart of an intention...of a letter, a person, an idea. Interestingly, today SHE is the one pursuing a doctorate. Aah, enlightenment.
