Happy #batmanday2018 ! Hope you’re reading some of your fave Batman stories today! Here’s some of what we’re reading today! So you think YOU’RE Batman’s biggest fan? Think again! That distinction and honor goes to Bat-Mite, who first appeared in Detective Comics #267 (1959). Created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, this imp from the fifth dimension visits the Caped Crusader in order to nudge him into insane predicaments. He just wants to see his hero in action! Bat-Mite was created in response to the popularity of Superman’s villainous imp, Mister Mxyzptlk. Bat-Mite also appeared in the 1970s cartoon The New Adventures of Batman and looked nothing like his comic counterpart. His recurring tagline was “All I wanna do is help!” Bat-Mite’s appearance in an issue of Legends of the Dark Knight (or mite, as the issue so aptly said on the cover!) and the Batman: Mitefall one-shot were two comics I adored as a kid. Do you like Bat-Mite as much as he likes Batman? You should! #billfinger #sheldonmoldoff #marshallrogers #detective #detectivecomics #batmite #fifthdimension #batman #capedcrusader #darkknight #darkknightdetective #maskedmanhunter #bat #bats #robin #boywonder #dynamicduo #thenewadventuresofbatman #cartoon #animation #comic #comics #comicbooks #dccomics #silverage #silveragecomics #talesfromthebatcave
Who here among us thinks that Aunt Harriet was created for the Batman 60s TV show? That’s an incorrect assumption, old chums! Aunt Harriet first appeared in Detective Comics #328 in 1964 (two years before the show!) and was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Sheldon Moldoff. After Alfred Pennyworth dies in the comics (long story!), Dick’s maternal aunt comes to stay with the boys and perform butler-like duties. When the TV show came along, Madge Blake was cast as the clueless aunt. The TV series did influence the comics, however. The last name of Cooper and the fact that she was a widow was added in Detective #373 (1968). Recently she appeared, naturally, in the Batman ‘66 comic. What are some of your favorite zany Aunt Harriet moments? #batman #capedcrusader #darkknight #darkknightdetective #maskedmanhunter #detective #bats #bat #robin #boywonder #dynamicduo #brucewayne #dickgrayson #auntharriet #harrietcooper #madgeblake #billfinger #sheldonmoldoff #dccomics #comic #comics #comicbooks #batman66 #adamwest #burtward #talesfromthebatcave
One of the earliest weapons in the Dark Knight’s arsenal is also one that is still ubiquitous in Bat comics and other Bat media: the Batarang (originally spelled Baterang). This weapon is first utilized in 1939’s Detective Comics #31 , which was written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff. It also happened to be the first appearance of the Batgyro. In 1957’s Detective Comics #244 , we’re introduced in a flashback to Australian circus performer Lee Collins. This is the man who taught Batman the art of boomeranging and also built him his very first Batarang as a gift. The issue was written by Bill Finger, drawn by Sheldon Moldoff, and inked by Charles Paris. We’ve gotten loads of different types of Batarangs in the comics over the years while every cinematic Batman uses this weapon to deter his villains. Do you think this is the Caped Crusader’s most indispensable weapon? #gardnerfox #bobkane #sheldonmoldoff #billfinger #charlesparis #leecollins #batarang #batman #capedcrusader #darkknight #darkknightdetective #maskedmanhunter #batgyro #dccomics #comic #comics #comicbooks #talesfromthebatcave #brucewayne #gothamcity #gotham

Before there was Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman there was Kathy Kane a.k.a. Batwoman. The first Batwoman appeared in 1956’s Detective Comics #233 and was created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff. The Bat-editor at the time, Jack Schiff, wanted to grow the Bat-family and make it as full as the Superman family was becoming. We not only got Batwoman, but characters such as Batgirl (who also has two iterations), Bat-Mite, and Ace the Bat-Hound. Batwoman was also utilized as a way to show the dynamic duo weren’t a romantic item, which was stated in the despicable anti-comic book screed Seduction of the Innocent from the ‘50s. 1964 came, Julius Schwartz became Bat-editor, and Batwoman and company were erased from the Bat-books. Years later, Kathy appeared in 1979’s Batman Family #10 and assisted Babs Gordon’s Batgirl to help defeat Killer Moth and Cavalier. But, that same year, she was killed off by the League of Assassins in Detective #485 . Grant Morrison, in his classic run, brought her back to great effect and gave her an amazing origin in 2011’s Batman Incorporated #11 (which I won’t spoil here!). Will Kathy ever return? Should she? You tell me, Bat-fanatics! #batwoman #kathykane #batman #robin #dynamicduo #darkknight #darkknightdetective #detective #detectivecomics #sheldonmoldoff #edmundhamilton #dccomics #comic #comics #comicbooks #talesfromthebatcave #silverage #silveragecomics

Holy shark-infested waters, Batman! Or should we say alien-infested waters?! The Batman 66 film was not the first time the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder utilized the Shark Repellent Bat Spray! Eight years earlier, in 1958’s Batman #117 , writer Arnold Drake and artist Sheldon Moldoff had the dynamic duo fend off a purple alien beast beneath the waters of an alien world with the handy spray! As Batman says, it was definitely his most wildest and dangerous manhunt ever! #sheldonmoldoff #batman #robin #boywonder #capedcrusader #darkknightdetective #darkknight #batman66 #sharkrepellent #sharkrepellentbatspray #alien #comic #comics #comicbooks #dccomics #talesfromthebatcave
“A History of The Batmobile” - The Late 1960s Icon: When #GeorgeBarris transformed a 1955 #Ford Lincoln Futura into the #Batmobile for the live action tv series and cinematic feature ‘#Batman ’ in 1966 (center panel), it changed the #CapedCrusader ’s super powered car into a pop culture icon along with the Dynamic Duo of Batman and #Robin themselves. During the three season run of the ABC tv show, the Batmobile not only appeared on tons of merchandise and collectibles, but also across several Batman publications in #DCComics . In the main Batman books, the car’s model reflected the #LincolnFutura on the big and small screen, such as in 1967’s #DetectiveComics 362 tale “The Night Batman Destroyed Gotham City” (top left panel by #SheldonMoldoff and #JoeGiella ) and 1968’s Detective 377 story “The Riddler's Prison-Puzzle Problem!" (top right panel by #FrankSpringer and #SidGreene ). Although the car isn’t the classic black with red side trim, it keeps the classic blue and black tint seen since the Golden Age comics and has a Bat ornament on the front facade. In the #DarkKnight centric tales published in The #BraveandtheBold , the Batmobile was modeled after a #Jaguar XKE (“Alias the Bat-Hulk” in Brave and the Bold 68 (bottom left panel by #MikeSekowsky and #MikeEsposito , 1966) and “Cancelled: 2 Super-Heroes” in Brave and the Bold 70 (bottom right panel by #JohnnyCraig and #ChuckCuidera , 1967)). Keeping many of the luxury features and iconography of Batman’s car such as tv monitors, direct radio access to Commissioner Gordon and the GCPD, bulletproof exterior and tires and the aesthetically fitting bubble canopies, the Batmobile at the end of the Silver Age of comics reflected its changing status to, at the time, the most recognizable car in popular culture.✌🏼❤️🦇🚘📚🎬 #TheBatman #HistoryoftheBatman #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #BatFans #InstaBatman
Good morning Gothamites and I hope you’re all having a wonderful Wednesday! Today (August 1) is #SpiderManDay and everyone is celebrating the #MarvelComics superhero! In the mid 1990s, inter-company crossover comic books were all the rage, especially #DCComics and #Marvel Comics crossovers. Both #Batman and #SpiderMan joined forces in this decade (such as in #JMDeMatteis ’ 1995 graphic novel “Spider-Man and Batman”, cover art presented by #MarkBagley and #MarkFarmer ) but in Marvel’s 1996 issue The #AmazingSpiderMan 411, writer #TomDeFalco paid homage to the #DarkKnight ’s origin story created by #BillFinger in 1939 (panels 4 and 5 from #DetectiveComics 33 illustrated by #BobKane and #SheldonMoldoff ); a young boy and his parents are stopped in a dark alley by a mugger who wants to steal the woman’s pearl neckless. Before the family is murdered, the web slinger swings in and punches the guy in the jaw (panel 2, illustrated by Bagley, #LarryMahlstedt and #BobSharen ). If this homage wasn’t enough, the young boy who is in awe of Spidey is wearing a Batman t-shirt (panel 3). While some say this could translate as Spider-Man saving the young boy would could of become a Batman type vigilante like the original #CapedCrusader , these pages still showcase the ever popular crossover era of the 1990s. Thanks for following and we’ll have more #HistoryoftheBatman soon so stay tuned!✌🏼❤️🦇🕷🎉#TheBatman #BruceWayne #DCComics #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #InstaBatman
Yvonne Craig portrayed Batgirl in the character's first adaptation outside of comic books on the 3rd season of Batman in 1967. She thought they hired her because they knew she could ride her own motorcycle but it was actually because she had a cartoon like voice. A criticism of Batgirl was that she was not allowed to engage in hand-to-hand combat on screen. Her fights were choreographed carefully to imitate the moves of a Broadway showgirl through the use of a straight kick to her opponent's face rather than the type of kick a martial artist would use. If she wasn't doing the Broadway kick she was either hitting someone with a box or a wooden board- but she was never actually seen punching someone in the face with her fists. Yvonne said the upside of playing Batgirl was that young women would say Batgirl was their role model, and made girld feel like they could do the same things guys could do. During the early 1970s, Craig portrayed Batgirl once again in a public service announcement to advocate equal pay for women ¤ Yvonne passed away on August 17th, 2015 at the age of 78 in Pacific Palisades, California, U.S. ¤ #YvonneCraig #Batgirl #BarbaraGordon #BillFinger  #SheldonMoldoff  #GothamCity #Gotham #GothamCitySirens #GothamGirl #GothamGirls #DcWomen #DcWoman #DcGirl #DcGirls #FemaleSuperhero #FemaleSuperheroes #Femalehero #Femaleheroes #SuperHeroine #SuperHeroines  #ComicBookWomen #ComicBookWoman #WomenOfComics #WomanOfComics #ComicBookGirl #ComicBookGirls #WilliamDozier #Batman66 #Batman1966 #DcNation
“A History of The Batmobile” - New and Improved for the Silver Age: At the beginning of the #SilverAge of #DCComics , #Batman ’s #Batmobile was reimagined in several stories. For instance, in #BillFinger ’s “The Third Alarm for Batman” published in 1955’s Batman issue 96, the Dynamic duo of the #CapedCrusader and #Robin the Boy Wonder team up with the Gotham City Fire Department to help them catch a gang of crooks all while advocating for fire prevention tactics (panel 2 by #SheldonMoldoff and #StanKaye ). Despite special circumstances like this, more standard additions to #theBatman ’s powerful car were added throughout the 1960s. The Batmobile as a whole gained an update in #EdHerron ’s “Two Way Gem Caper” (panels 3-5 by Moldoff and Giella, 1964’s Batman 164). Modeled after the sporty and trendy vehicles of the decade such as a Chevrolet Corvette or Porsche 356, the two seated roadster with a curved bubble canopy has a hot line phone that calls directly to #CommissionerGordon ’s office. This Batmobile debuted shortly after the #DarkKnight officially received a ‘new look’ (first seen in 1964’s World’s Finest Comics 141), which includes the addition of the new yellow chest Batman emblem (cover panel to Batman 164 by Moldoff and #JoeGiella ). The blue and black speedster would be upgraded again to reflect the Dynamic Duo’s now iconic take on the small screen, which we will discuss next in our retrospect. ✌🏼❤️🦇🚘 #HistoryoftheBatman #DickGrayson #BruceWayne #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #BatmanFans #BatFans #InstaBatman

“A History of The Batmobile” - Bruce Wayne’s First Luxury Car: When #BruceWayne aka #Batman debuted in #BillFinger and #BobKane ’s “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” published in #DetectiveComics 27 on March 30, 1939, the Dark Avenger didn’t have a “#Batmobile ” with all the bells and whistles attached. Instead, as both the #CapedCrusader and the young socialite, he drove a red convertible modeled after 1936’s Cord 810 Cabriolet (panel 1 by Kane). 8 issues later, in Finger’s story “The Case of the Ruby Idol”, Batman now drives a blue “high-powered roadster” when he tries to track down Hindu idol worshippers who threatened the life of a businessman named Weldon (panel 2 by Kane and #SheldonMoldoff , 1940’s Detective Comics 35). In the Spring of 1940, Batman received his own publication, fighting villains such as #Joker and #HugoStrange with #Robin the Boy Wonder. In the following year, in Finger’s tale “The Secret Cavern” in the pages of Detective 48, the #DarkKnight ’s vehicle for the first time was called the Batmobile (panel 3 by Kane, #JerryRobinson and #GeorgeRoussos ). The next month in Batman issue 5, the reader gets a look at the more “Bat-centric” vehicle in Finger’s “The Riddle of the Missing Card”; the red Cord is now a two door blue Sedan with a large bat-shaped fixture on the front grille and huge tailfins (panel 4 by Kane, Robinson and Roussos). More features are added during the early 1940s (reinforced steel, a high powered engine, etc.) in comics and the Batmobile makes its debut on film in 1943, which we’ll highlight next in this retrospect. ✌🏼💙🦇🚘 #TheBatman #HistoryoftheBatman #Car #DCComics #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #BatmanFans #BatFans #InstaBatman
