In ancient Greece a symposium (a part of the banquet after the meal) was held in the men’s area of the house called the androne. Here a fella could relax with his friends, drink watered down wine, enjoy music, dancing, recitals and games. The symposium could be anything from a philosophical discussion group to a drunken orgy. He might have his friends over, some prostitutes and concubines but never his wife.
Wine was mixed with water in a large pot in the centre of the room called a krater and then withdrawn with amphora or other vessels. One particular type of cup was called a kylix and it had a wide shallow bowl with two handles and a fluted base. It is believed that the kylix was used in a type of game called kottabos where wine was swirled in the cup and then tossed at a target. One can let their imagination run free with the sorts of variations this game might have at one of those drunken orgies.
Anyway, it is on these pieces of pottery that the erotic images of that time were painted and likely added to the stimulation to get everyone in the mood for some hanky-panky. Contrary to what you might think, we don’t really have a lot of these types of orgiastic symposiums at our house. My intention with the erotic pottery isn’t to whet my dinner guests appetites for some sexy dessert. Instead, i guess, I’m trying to encourage the private symposiums we all have in our own ways. Adding a bit of titillation to the dinner plate. Delighting in the delights of the flesh while feeding the flesh. .
