X-ray of my spine circa 2016 showing the extent of scoliosis and spinal fusion instrumentation
I was diagnosed with idiophatic scoliosis at the age of 10 from regular school check ups. From then on I was being followed by specialists every few months. At around the age of 13 I had a back brace fitted, which to be fair I did not wear as frequently as advised as it was extremely uncomfortable and I felt conscious going to school with it during the teenage phase.
At the age of 15 during one of what I thought was a routine check up, the consultant had told me that my two curves had progressed to 60 and 57 degrees and that I required surgery... not one but two due to both these curves creating an ‘S’ shape in the spine. I was operated on the 12th and 18th of November, 2010.
The picture on the left shows an x-ray of my spine prior to surgery and the image on the right was a year after spinal fusion with Harrington titanium rods. #scoliosis #scoliosissurgery #scoliosissupport #life #potd #instadaily #instagram #scoliosisgirl #scoliosisfighter #scoliosiswarrior #scoliosisstrong #scars #titanium #harringtonrods
Scoliosis affects many different aspects of your life but one of the most self esteem knocking ones is the general appearance of your body. As teens at this time in our lives, we want to have that amazing figure that every girl dreams of - but of course scoliosis can't let that happen. Instead, it causes us to have uneven hips, wonky shoulder blades, rib humps on front and back and an overall slouching position. Because of this, we're forced to wear baggy clothes that hide all of this. We can't let our scoliosis stop us from wearing what we want. We can't let it make us feel upset and self conscious. It is so important to learn to rise above this and realize that you are perfect the way you are. You are you and you are beautiful. Keep fighting.💪💚🌻

In all forms, early diagnosis of scoliosis is a primary goal. Treatment is always focused on slowing or preventing progression of the curve. I recommend all children between the ages of 8-15 receive a scoliosis screening. If you'd like more information or schedule your child's scoliosis screening, please contact my office at (954) 567-1332 or visit cantorspine.com.

É difícil, é doloroso. Mas, ver uma cicatriz é entender que tudo aquilo passou e que você sobreviveu, apesar de negatividade, apesar de todos os preconceitos e apesar de todas as reprovações.

3 years ago I walked into surgery to correct my scoliosis! What a journey it has been. I’m very grateful for that transformation so long ago. It feels more like yesterday than 3 yrs. Although it was a hard recovery, it wasn’t all bad. I saw a lot of good in my life during that time. I saw lots of love, care, and service. At times, I felt this recovery was impossible. I wondered how I was going to make it through. But each day it started getting a little better & a little easier. Now, my scoliosis surgery is just a sweet memory that I will treasure forever. “Everything is possible. Even the impossible.” -Mary Poppins

"Thank you old brace for doing a great job, but I'm just too big for you now." Charlotte is ready for her big girl brace!💕 Her curve has gone from 53 degrees to 15 degrees, and her smiles show how remarkable she's doing! #idiopathicinfantilescoliosis
I was looking through some photos and decided I would do a #facetofacefriday
I don’t have a lot of myself, especially when I’m bigger. However as I am feeling determined I wanted to give myself that little bit of an extra boost. So here we are the one on the left is me 5 1/2 lb heavier than I am now (it was taken on New Year’s Eve) and the one on the right was of me about 4 years ago approx 1/2 stone away from where I’ve want to be this time round. It’s not always easy, over the years I always saw #slimmingworld
as a diet, this time round I don’t see it that way it’s my lifestyle. Happy Friday everyone ❤️ #scoliosis #scoliosissurgery #scoliosiswarrior #osteoarthritis

Have your kids been in their bathers? 🧐 Check out their spines and keep an eye out for:
• an “s” or “c” shaped spine
• uneven hip heights
• uneven waist creases
• uneven shoulder heights • torso rotation or uneven “winging” of shoulder blades
** lots of these signs can be completely harmless, but can also be signs of a scoliosis. We are big fans of early detection and regular monitoring of scoliosis. A young spine responds waaayy better to conservative treatment (eg bracing) than an older spine. Feel free to chat to us if you’ve got any concerns!

Ik I shouldnt have to try and hide it but everyday I try and hide my scoliosis.
I have no nice clothes, my hair desperately needs to be cut but I’m trying to grow it so it hides my back and nobody seems to get anything I’m trying to say.
Everyone says ‘oh nobody cares’ but that’s not the point, I care, I am insecure and I need to hide it otherwise I cannot even get through 5 mins even with my super baggy clothes.
Nobody gets it and nobody will ever get it which is hard especially with my bestest friends.
I dont talk to my parents about stuff like this cause I hate having awkward convos and I find I really difficult to be upset or in pain in front of people. This is to the point where I don’t want them to be with me in hospital when I have surgery. Were your friends and family there? Did you need them? ❤️ #s #scoliosisawareness #scoliosissurgery #scoliosis #bentbutnotbroken #scoliosisfighter
Finishing up rounding on my patients this evening and got to see this lovely young lady who is staying at the Ronald McDonald House! Kaylee is doing very well and I am so excited to see her recover beautifully. Thumbs up for Kaylee and thank you to the team at Ronald McDonald House for welcoming our out of town patients!!!
I have to be honest-- as I've learned the Pilates repertoire, there are some exercises that I've mentally dismissed because my fused spine doesn't allow me to "fully" perform them. Climb a Tree is one of those. "My spine doesn't flex or extend, so I'm just not going to try that." (cue heavy sigh and self-hating inner dialogue here) •
But today, I figured out a way to make the foundational shape of this exercise work for my body (side note, this video is sped up). The partially deflated Overball under my lumbar spine offers support and allows me to tip backward and engage my lower abs without attempting to bend the fused portion of my spine. The magic circle helps me modify both for tight hamstrings and limited spinal flexion (plus it keeps my hip flexors calmer). No, it doesn't look exactly like the classical exercise. No, it doesn't look the same as it would on a body with a mobile spine. But it feels AWESOME in my body, and in case you can't tell, it still had my abs QUIVERING from working!
HERE'S THE DEAL: scoliosis, spinal conditions, and other body pathologies do NOT mean you can't work out. In fact, they mean your body needs self-love in the form of movement even more! Having some kind of "body challenge" is NOT an insurmountable obstacle, as long as you're willing to use your brain, be creative, and push past the tendency to mentally dismiss anything that doesn't come easily.
Where will your movement creativity take you today? Find freedom in YOUR body!
