Like if this heroic elephant rescue story makes you believe in the good nature of humankind. Absolute heroes!! @dswt
When this huge elephant found himself hopelessly stuck in mud, it took an equally Herculean effort to haul him to safety. Working with the @kenyawildlifeservice
, and members of the local community, we worked tirelessly over the course of three days to save his life.
The bull’s sheer size aside, the operation was made all the more difficult by the treacle-like earth surrounding him. It took many hands, using various equipment, to eventually maneuver the elephant into place so that we could place straps around him and connect them, daisy chain style, to two lorries that were on firmer ground.
He was finally pulled clear late on Monday, only to slide back in overnight.
So, the operation resumed on Tuesday morning — this time with three Land Cruisers strapped together to extract him once more. Once the bull was clear, KWS veterinarian Dr. Kariuki (of the DSWT-funded Amboseli Veterinary Unit) administered medications and fluids to help him regain his strength.
Finally, three days after rescue efforts began, the bull walked off into the bush, free at last. #DSWTFieldSuccessStories
Many hands came together to save this bull’s life. His equally exhausted rescuers — sporting all manner of bumps, bruises, and even broken bones — refused to give up on him, and it thanks to their undaunted efforts that he has a future. To read the full story, visit:
