DIET STAPLES ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If I squint it looks like a pizza 🍕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ok not quite but it tastes damn good. During a diet or fat loss process it could help to have some handy, quick & convenient go-to meals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is maybe an extreme example but it does the required job at this time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Low(er) Calories calls for two things for me : ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▶️ Satiety - This is egg whites & @eatlean cheese. We know that protein is the most satiating of the macronutrients meaning it will keep me feeling full for longer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▶️ Food volume - Low Calorie foods that come in higher volume such as egg whites definitely help with hunger and also triggering stretch receptors in the stomach. Fibre, protein and fat are nutrients that can make you feel fuller for longer. Each nutrient has many important roles in the body and one of them is maintaining satiety. How many of you have gone on a diet? (Um... everybody, right?) And when you went on a diet, did you start eating salads? I know I've definitely done that, and salads are my go-to choice for a healthy lunch. But did you know that they can actually sabotage your weight loss if they're not built correctly? What?! ✨ Yep! If you're the master of salad creations, but they still leave you feeling hungry, something is wrong. The missing ingredient ... FAT! But not just any fat, the right kinds of fat. ✨ You might build salads filled with raw veggies and topped with some delicious protein, but without the fat, not only may you not see weight loss, but you're also not absorbing all of the nutrients in those veggies. ✨ You see, the fat soluble vitamins in vegetables (like A, D, E, and K) cannot be properly absorbed in the absence of fat. These vitamins, as well as carotenoids (hello carrots) and lycopene (hello tomatoes), aren't really assimilated into our bodies unless fat is also present. ✨ As for weight loss, fats help create satiety and literally turn off hunger signals in the body ... even proteins can't effectively do that. ✨ So what kinds of fat are best? I’ll be the first to recognize that making change is hard. Especially when we have become accustomed to the habit(s) over years. How many of us have made a resolution, with the best intent, but fall off the wagon after a month? 🙋🏻‍♀️ - - That’s why in my practice, instead of overly critiquing what needs change, or be “removed” from ones habits, I emphasize adoption of a new habits or alternative, to help replace harmful ones. Additionally I educate- not only on why something is bad, but also the benefits to be expected of the suggested alternatives.Through self-paced transitions, eventually one begins to experience the benefit of the new habit and/or recognize on their own, the disadvantage of the bad one. - - This process deepens the connection to the Why. Or personal Gain, in letting go of the beloved [insert vice here]. And leads to a more aware lifestyle, that begins to facilitate healthier choices naturally or more easily over time. - - - I know one big hurtle is sugar cravings/addiction. To be successful in removing that sugar packed “energy bar”, or other afternoon sugary snack or drink, most need a substitute, or at least in the beginning. These little gems are packed full of goodness to not only help with cravings, but curb your appetite with protein, fiber, and healthy fat. They are free of refined sugar, which will prevent blood sugar spike/crash. HALT HUNGER by @marcinevin 👇🏼 - I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if fat loss is your goal and your eating in a way that supports that (i.e. calorie deficit), you’re going to feel hungry at some point. It’s inevitable and something you must learn how to push through. Even so, there are some strategies to make hunger less frequent and more manageable. - Make your meals a combo of protein, starch, veggies, and a little fat. Prioritize protein and veggies first, then add the starch and fat to your preference. - Fiber stretches your stomach and signals fullness. It also slows down how quickly your food is digested, so you stay fuller for longer. Fill up on fruits and veggies, as well as grains, beans, sweet potatoes and squash. - Inhaling your food won't leave you feeling satisfied. Take the time to enjoy your meals so that you actually feel full when you're done. - Depriving yourself of all foods you enjoy only leads you to fixate on what you can’t have. Instead, find ways to incorporate those foods into your diet in moderate amounts so that you feel more satisfied overall. - Often times we think we are hungry when we are really just thirsty, so be sure to drink lots of water along with other zero calorie drinks throughout the day. - Liquid calories do virtually nothing for hunger suppression, so more often than not choose to chew your calories. - Sleep deprivation messes with hunger hormones, so make sure you're gettin 7-9 hours every night. - Caffeine can help blunt hunger, just don't use it as a crutch every time you feel a bit of hunger coming on. - Keep you mind off food by staying busy. In the U.K. nearly 60% of women and 70% of men are either overweight or obese (27% of the population being obese). This is not discriminatory - it’s simply a fact 🙂. -
- 🍟Some say food is to blame. “There’s more fast food than ever”. “We have more supermarkets today”. “More processed food.” “More income to eat more food”. “Less time for exercise”. Here’s the thing... We are not robots. None of the above automatically causes obesity in human beings. We cause obesity ourselves, regardless of the environment. There is easier access to cheap, high calorie junk food, but also to low calorie wholefoods. You can find cheap wholefoods with a little effort. The choice is yours.

- 🤔Now onto the hot topic. Cancer. This week I’ve seen and heard a plethora of negativity towards this campaign because it’s ‘fat shaming’ and ‘discriminating’. What I see here is a conflict between fact and emotion. This campaign is not a witch hunt against anyone with a high BMI... It’s about delivering a factual message to prevent disease and improve the health of a nation - which is steam rolling towards 1/3 of its population being obese. I feel the reasons for the negativity are down to a misunderstanding of the message. It’s not personal. Just because you are overweight or obese, it doesn’t change you. You are not judged. You still laugh. You still cry. You should never be judged as a person by obesity, but based on facts, your health should be. And this is a message regarding your health. -
- 😶Some people don’t get a chance with cancer. It takes them from us regardless of their choices in life. Think about them. But if you have a chance to reduce the risk, even by the smallest margin, I think it seems foolish not to take it. -

Thermic effect of food🔥 In the previous post about the TDEE, I went through all the components a TDEE includes. Now, I would like to go a bit deeper with the thermic effect of food, which could pretty much make a difference on how much weight or fat you gain when you are in a caloric surplus.🤓 To recapulate, thermic effect of food is the energy cost your body needs to convert food into energy and it varies for each macronutrients.🔥 For the sake of this example, let’s pretend that food x contains either just protein, carbs or fats. If food x contains 100 calories of protein, your body would burn 20-30% to convert the food into energy. At the end, 70-80 calories would be stored as energy.🍗 If food x contains 100 calories of carbs, your body would then burn 5-6% to convert the food into energy. Here, 94-95 calories would be stored as energy.🍞 If the food contains 100 calories of pure fats, you would burn on average 3% to convert the food into energy, therefore, 97% would be stored as energy.🥜 Eating a lot of protein will less likely make you gain weight/fat compared to carbs or fats. By understanding this concept, you can manipulate your caloric intake when your primary goal is to build muscle.
