The lights are getting lighter and it’s time to run off the Christmas belly. -
If you are stepping foot into the gym for the first time in January you have probably read that the best methods to build muscle is through compound exercises such as the squat, deadlift and bench press. This absolutely what I would recommend but just blindly jumping into these exercises without learning the movement, probably isn’t the best idea.
For example most programmes recommend the barbell back squat as the squat of choice. The back squat is generally a brilliant exercise but not what I would initially recommend for a beginner and certainly not for the first ever loaded variation of a squat.
Here are some simple tips to help you learn how to squat and work your way up to performing the back squat. Fear not, you’ll still gain loads of strength and muscle with these techniques and as an added bonus you’ll learn to back squat with good technique.
Once you can do each stage with perfect form, it's time to move onto the next! If you are unsure on how to do the moves above with perfect form, try asking one of the personal trainers at your gym, if it requires you paying for a session, this is a pretty sound investment at the start of your gym experience.
One further point, I've said many times that the back squat might not be the best squat type for everyone so you can mix it up with different variations and it maybe that simply the goblet squat is the best squat for you, but this is the process of learning I'll do with every client!

Windy run home today - might've been a mistake with my sore leg, but it's now been slathered in muscle rub and is on fiyahhh 🔥, so I'm sure everything will be fine. Resting now for the next few days. I've a 5K race this weekend and a 10K next week, don't want to miss either of them. And, despite the splinty feeling that developed, this run felt great and refreshing and I'm so glad I caught a break in the rain 😂

Day 56: 5 miler Steady Run ✅
Running in this city is definitely a blessing. Beautiful day and perfect weather 🙌🏻 Today was the day to try running with an empty stomach. I was definitely scared but I am surprised with the results.😲
My performance was the same and I felt great. I have been running just with fats as fuel since about 2 months ago and I think that helped me a lot today. It seams that my body is already fat adapted 🙌🏻
This doesn’t mean I am going to be running on an empty stomach always, but it was a great to see how it works.🧐

Did a little run yesterday 😂 4 hours in driving sleet in the Brecon Beacons is a really great way to spend a January weekend, but probably the only way I can get away with deep throating an entire M&S salted caramel cheesecake in a remote car park without raising suspicion. Long distance training started with my new elf ears ha ha!!! It was not a speed run but wasn’t testing that , I was testing my distance strength , happy with it , looks like if i pass 6k I can fly 😜!!! Before I set off Nike calculated like I will run 7k in 40:49 ..... I was like what a crap .. I should run it like 35 minuets if I push it or 34 .....I done it 37:46 what is not too bad . Will do 2x 5k cheeky run and will start to work on my sprint this week. Next week will run 9k in one go and 2x 5k . That is my running plan for the next 2 weeks. : Day 16 - Evening Run 🏃🏻♂️ ♥️ I finished today strong with a fairly easy-going run. With going back to work recently I had taken today off to allow myself and my body to recover so have not done a huge amount by my high standards. It’s important to rest when you need to, but I also know what is good for my mind... and what is good for my mind is to finish the day with a short run. I prefer to run either early in the morning or later in the evening because these are the times of day when I struggle the most mentally. Running is a form of therapy for me.. it allows me to unwind, let go, and burn off any negative energy. I always feel so much better after a run - even the shorter ones.
Today my mind completely drifted off and has inspired me to write something this evening. It’s amazing how your mind can drift off in to the strangest places. Running/Exercise can do that - it can inspire creativity and deeper thinking as well as being a good distraction from the stresses of day-to-day life! I am now going to start work on writing.. I have to be honest I’m a little bit apprehensive about this one but I’m going to do it anyway! 📝
