Repost from May 1, 2017 (revised) ¶ Sandy Peterson’s Call of Cthulhu is one of my longtime favorite RPGs. I started running it back in 1992, with Faith No More’s Angel Dust as the soundtrack. I have since accumulated a gigantic pile of sourcebooks. All of them, barring some minuscule variations and reprints, in fact. My love for the game runs that deep. ¶ This is the 1982 printing of the first edition rules (the only difference from the 1981 printing being a skinnier box and some rules errata in the back cover). For the price of admission, you get of the Cthulhu-fronted rulebook, the blimpy 1920s Sourcebook, some standees, a world map decorated with tentacles and a booklet of character sheets. There’s also a copy of Chaosium’s newbie-aimed booklet Basic Roleplaying. ¶ Early Chaosium products didn’t have the multitudes of art that TSR publications of the era had, but the late, great Gene Day delivers some classics, including the box art, all pictured here. Also, I dig the brown ink they used to print the text and illustrations – very warm and welcoming, considering this is a game about cosmic horrors beyond human comprehension. ¶ Patreon link in bio! #RPG #TTRPG #TabletopRPG #roleplayinggame #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #DandD #Chaosium #CallofCthulhu #SandyPeterson #Cthulhu #horror #Lovecract #GeneDay
ARS MAGICA - 3rd EDITION CORE BOOK
White Wolf WW203
1992 Softback 392 pages
Winning over Traveller : New Era by the narrowest of margins I begin my posts through White Wolfs game of medieval magic - Ars Magic (ArM from here on in). ArM started its life under a small company called Lion Rampant and was written by Mark Rein Hagen and Jonathan Tweet.
The basic premise of the game is players take the role of a powerful Magus (Wizard) and his or her companions and servants, the PCs as a whole will share a home, or Covenant. The stories the group tells are intended to follow the homestead through the seasons of nature, Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter, watching the covenant grow and shrink over the years of the campaign.
The setting is historical medieval Europe of 1220 A.D. from the perspective of the beliefs of the time. Fairies, Demons and mythical beasts can all exist in the game but are intended to be rare and on the fringes and darker/wilder parts of the world.
Each player creates a tree of characters, from lowly servants, called Grogs, then companions (equivilent to a common dnd character) and then the Magus at the top of the tree.
It is assumed in any one particular session or adventure, only one player will use his Magus, the others selecting from amongst their other characters to create an ad hoc party. As sessions change, it is intended, characters take turns controlling their wizards and different/recurring characters.
In play over time this really helps to create a great sense of community for a covenant.
The highlight of the game is its Magic system. I do not think a better magic system has been written for an rpg (im happy to discuss this is people think otherwise). It it the medieval proto version of the system that would be used in Mage the Ascension years later.
Basically its a freeform magic system that allows wizards to control various realms of magic (life, death, fire, earth etc) with various competency and to create spells that fit within his level of control by combining these realms in various ways. It put alot of pressure on the players and gm to understand and learn the magic system, but the results are worth it.
Você conhece a história de Scanlan Shorthalt, Bardo Extraordinário? 😏
