Low Back Pain
This is probably the number 1 complaint I see as a personal trainer. Unfortunately, we all suffer it from it at some point.
If you’ve suffered it I’m sure you’ve googled ways to help relieve it. So, instead of me spitting info back at you I’m going to go over 6 moves I do with my clients who come in with back stiffness or pain.
👉🏼Lying QL stretch. This has to be one of my ultimate faves probably it feels so good when you do it correctly. Lie on your back with shoulders pinned to the floor. Cross one ankle to opposite knee which is bent. Pull your knee with ankle on it across your body toward the floor so that feel a stretch on the side of your back of the foot on floor. You can play around with where you foot is on the floor to feel a difference in your back.
👉🏼Lying glute stretch - bring one knee up toward your chest and drop it over to the opposite side making sure shoulders stay flat on the floor. The angle of your knee and how high you bring it will make a difference in this stretch.
👉🏼Couch or Wall stretch - this a great one for your quads. However if you’re in acute pain this might be hard to do. With one knee on the ground bring your foot up to an elevated position on a couch, bench or wall. Make sure you’re not on top of your knee cap - ouch. You will rock forward and backward make sure you aren’t hinging at the hip.
👉🏼Hip 90/90 stretch. This is from the #kinstretch
world. Great stretch to open up the hips and glutes. The key is to push your weight down into the floor as you lean forward with tension throughout your body while breathing. In the photo the focus is on the front leg glute. 👉🏼Kneeling Hip Flexor stretch - Place 1 foot up in a half lunge position with keeping back knee on the ground. Focus on pushing hip forward to feel a stretch in the front of the back leg
👉🏼Pelvic Tilts - often times our pelvis get stuck in forward or backwards from usually sitting too much. Doing pelvic tilts lying on them floor, kneeling or standing will help restore some movement and blood flow to the area. These are a daily move for everyone. period.

Reflecting back on the pain I was experiencing at the end of the year there are a few things that stand out that I want to share.
1. Let things be.✨✨ Overfocusing, Overthinking can get the mind really wound up and anxious. Testing to see if a pain is still there or thinking about it as you move is just focusing on negative imagery and self talk. Instead try paying attention to what feels good? What makes you smile? What do you see in your environment around you? How do those things make you feel?
2. Breathe.✨✨ Allow the diaphragm to move up and down. Notice and feel what moves when you breathe. Breathe can get shallow when we are scared, stressed, tense. Can you remind yourself to breathe?
3. Don’t stop moving.✨✨ Gentle movements, mindful movements. We are designed to move. And though your movement may not look like going to yoga or Pilates class, can you think about your daily bending, reaching, carrying being like its own Vinyasa flow or strength training.
4. There is a purpose in everything. ✨✨ What is this experience telling you? Can you learn from it and make changes for where you are right now? There is something bigger and brighter on the other side.✨✨

When you transition from one activity to another, take a minute out. Just 1 to 3 minutes.
Close your eyes, repeat to yourself, “release”, and let go of any tension. Consider who and how you want to be for the next activity, and set that intention. Open your eyes and go. Kind of like a mini meditation!

This concept is difficult for me - I like plans, I like to make them, follow them and have them go exactly like I imagined.. haha really though. But with art I am continually presented with opportunities to release my view of what something should turn into and instead stay open. Art truly brings out the better parts of me.
I remember trying to teach my dog to ‘release’ the ball or the toy in her mouth as we were playing. I find comfort in recalling how difficult it was for her to let go, even though each time the game ended she had the toy. The outcome was consistent and even then she didn’t want to give it up.
There’s peace that comes with loosening your grip on the outcomes of situations in your life. There’s a calmness and a clarity to being in the moment and trusting you’ll be guided where you need to go. Painting or otherwise.
These florals represent that type of peace after being able to release whatever it is that’s keeping you down, stressed and tense. They float, effortlessly and in no hurry to get to their destination.

My self practice for the last few weeks has been imagery in daily movement sprinkled in with some Franklin Method ball release and band exercises. I’ve taken a break from a more structured exercise practice like swimming, yoga, weight training, and body weight exercises. I love exercise but my body was telling me I needed a break. Partly I was feeling run down and a little sick, but a larger part of me wanted to fully embrace the power of what I am teaching. I am strengthening the connection between my mind and body using imagery relating to all the muscles, their fascial connections and expansions, and how they work together in slings and fascial joints when we walk, bend, reach, etc. I get a lot of time to practice because in daily life I do a lot of these movements. The exciting part about this work is that I still feel incredibly fit and athletic.
