My alignment has felt off lately. There has been a lot weighing on my mind and I’m feel the stress physically in my body. There are unknowns in the foreseeable future and it’s been hard not to worry. What I do know is that when I’m caught up in my head my body gets static. My breath becomes shallow, I feel tension in different areas of the body, and areas that are sore seem to become more sore. S E L F C A R E . I try to set time aside for some major self care each month. With all of the traveling and manual labor I do, things like this keep me sane AND going. I’m also a huge advocate of “practice what you preach”...so when I make suggestions to my clients, friends, and family, chances are I’m taking the advice too. . I received this treatment, along with an amazing massage, from my girl @dawnskishelton at @methodathlete in Scottsdale AZ. I try to see this magical massage therapist whenever I’m back in AZ, as long as both of our crazy schedules permit it! . Cupping has been a big help for me lately. When I feel really “stuck” in my tissue, modalities like this help my body become unglued, so to speak. Not only did this help to release fascial tension, it also helped draw toxicity from my tissue as well. What a treatment!! I had some junk that needed to be released!!! . As I always tell everyone, it is extremely important to hydrate after any kind of bodywork. I was chugging water after this! Hydrating after a treatment not only helps to flush out all of the unwanted “junk” that has been worked out of your body, it also rehydrates the body to keep it happy and functioning optimally! Water also helps to decrease the level of soreness one may experience after an intense treatment. . Yoga helped get me through my first year of work and IBS. # I was living in New York City and starting a career as a journalist. I finished graduate school and the symptoms of IBS began to appear. # I lived in a soup of stress and my body and mind were struggling. # My Friday night yoga class was weekly therapy. It released built up stress from the week. I loved the routine, the community and the focus on spirit and self care. # Stress creates pressures, tensions & contractions in the body. If you don’t release those tensions, like steam from a pressure cooker, it will build up and get worse. # Releasing and reducing stress from the body is a vital part of healing, especially for those with IBS. Finding a regular release you enjoy will make a difference in how you feel. Yoga is not for everyone but it’s not the only option. Find your release. # Don’t over exercise though, it adds to the stress.

Simple move that helps with back and knee pain @fitomizefitness The standing quad stretch focuses on the quadriceps (front-thigh muscles). This muscle is the largest in your lower body and tends to be shorten from all the sitting we do these days. So, when doing this move be extra gentle with this stretch if you’re prone to knee or lower-back pain. ___ The standing quad stretch is excellent for improving flexibility, but if you suffer from knee or back pain, you should go easy in this stretch. Or you can do a similar stretch while lying on your side (I’ve done this video a few weeks back), bending your top knee, and bringing your heel toward your buttocks. Follow these steps to see the standing quad stretch. HOW: 1.Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart, pull your abdominals in, and relax your shoulders. 2.Bend your left leg, bringing your heel toward your butt, and grasp your left foot with your right hand. 3.You can grasp your left foot with your left hand, if the opposite hand is too uncomfortable. You should feel a mild pull gradually spread through the front of your left leg. 4.Hold onto a tree or the wall if you have trouble balancing. 5.Don’t lock the knee of your base leg (the one you’re standing on). OPTION half kneeling quad stretch 1.In a half kneel position bring your back foot up and try to grab with your hand. 2.Lean forward with your hip to feel a stretch down the front of your back thigh 3.Stretch until feeling mild discomfort—don't go beyond this to the point of pain. 4.Don't allow your bent knee to move or drift outward. TIPS - 1.If you aren't yet able to reach your ankle to hold it during the stretch, try this: Loop a towel around your ankle and grab both ends. This way you can hold the leg in a bend without needing to reach all the way to the ankle. 2.Be careful not to strain your knee. The goal is not to touch your heel to the buttock, but rather to feel the gradual stretch in the thigh.
