The Story of Little Audrey Santo (1997)
Here's a depressing one. Audrey Santo and her family lived about an hour and a half from me. Born into an extremely religious family in 1983, Audrey at the age of 3 suffered a near-drowning accident which left her bedridden and unresponsive. Her mother foolishly flew her to Medjugorje, Bosnia (the town where six children supposedly conversed with the Virgin Mary) in hopes that she'd be healed. During the trip, Audrey had a heart attack which her mother blamed on a nearby abortion clinic. Audrey was unable to move or speak, but her eyes would flutter and move all about. The claim was that Audrey was a "victim soul" who had the power to heal. Her living quarters was a garage turned into a chapel, littered with statues and a tabernackle that people would gather around in hopes of being healed of their illnesses. The statues supposedly dripped oil (which was later tested and confirmed to be 75% olive oil) and the communion wafers were smeared with blood. They began soaking cotton balls in the oil and distributing it to people for "donations". Her family also installed a big window in her room for people to come gawk at her from outside like a freak until the Bishop ordered that it be removed. She remained in this state until her death in 2007. I've come across 3 copies of this film so far, one even containing a packet of oil from the statues (thanks to @thebeardpower
). A sad and true story of the exploitation of a sick and innocent girl.
