17th Feb 2019: First social ride with #rapha
on a Sunday morning 7 am. One of my new year's resolutions was to get on my bike and stick to riding. I've tried so many different sports but the one thing that makes me really feel pushed is cycling. Something about the climbs that test my perseverance, the wind that nearly topples me over, and the velocity of the wheels really excites me. I don't think I was very prepared for the ride; having set an arbitrary date on my calendar I somehow chose one which coincided with the city's largest marathon (which diverted a lot of traffic) and the conditions were mildly wet. I was made a fool when a fellow rider asked me why I hadn't changed the gears on one of the first ascents.
My eyes were peeled when we reached the downhill slopes of Stanley and Aberdeen. Traffic made the experience as harrowing as if I was walking through the safari with nothing between myself and wild animals.
But somehow I made it through the challenging 60km. Rapha staff may have physically pushed me up some steep spots to encourage me (thank you for being there I'm not sure what I would've done without you guys), and I may have shouted a few times as my wheels rolled over some dented parts of the road, but all of it was thrilling.
I can't wait to do this more. You see my face is all crinkled up and I'm genuinely smiling, so it really must be special.
