King of the Scree
At 9 pm I was walking up the gravel bar into the valley crisscrossing the East fork of the Tolkat, when I heard the loud “cheeep!”
Pika’s! I’m camping there. Easy.
After bunkering for a day and two nights during a rain storm, it eventually turned into a snowstorm. Deciding the snow to be more preferrable, I found a seat in the tallus. Over an hour passed before I saw movement, and the boulder I longingly hoped to see a little rabbit creature pose like pride rock came to fruition.
For those who aren’t familiar, pikas are little rabbit creatures that have mastered the art of living in alpine tallus. This little one will stay awake all winter in denali lodged in the boulders where it has a storeroom for it’s cache of dried plant material, a drying room for the new wet plant material, a latrine, and a bedroom full of insulation it has gathered. Cant believe I’ve finally seen them preparing for winter! Woohoo!
